“When Grizzlies Walked Upright”

The Modoc Tribe This origin myth comes from the Modoc tribe. • It explains that “The Sky Spirit” created the earth and the Native Americans. Just like “The Earth on Turtle’s Back,” it was passed down from generation to generation orally so it is not known exactly when it was created but we know it was before the 1400’s.

Author’s Purpose • Explains the creation of Mount Shasta and the land and animals nearby. • Tells how the daughter of the Sky Spirit marries a bear and their children become the first Native Americans. • Tells how the daughter of the Sky Spirit marries a bear and their children become the first Native Americans.
