What it means for all of us. “SUSTAINABILITY”

What is sustainability? Commonly accepted definitions:  We’re not overextending ourselves today in light of the needs of generations to come.  Triple bottom line – balanced values –3Es – (social) equity, environment & economics –3Ps – people, planet & profit

1st E – Economics (Profit)  The industrial revolution  Sales, profits, growth  Smokestacks  Rampant pollution

2 nd E – Ecology (Place)  Early ‘60’s thru ‘80’s  Environmental movement  Crying Indian  Jacque Cousteau  EPA  Strong regulations  Command & Control

2 nd E – Ecology (Place)  Late ‘80’s, early ‘90’s  2 E’s can work  Can co-exist…be compatible  Industrial Compliance - “can make $ but must protect environment”  “Greening” of industry

3 rd E-Equity (People)  World is changing  Fairness, justice, social, & global responsibility  Global conferences-WTO events

So Many Issues  Child labor  Crime  Equal pay for equal work  Educational inequity  Corporate power  Drug abuse & economic machine  Globalization  War  Civil unrest

“ Triple Bottom Line ” Social Equity (People) Environmental Protection (Place) Economic Development (Profit) Need Balance S

3 Need to Work Together  A journey- companies at different places  Groups & sectors at different places  Countries at different places  Requires conscious decisions

This is a principle approach - not an end point
