GOATS

Why goats? On page 23 of my book, Elena cuts up a goat so they can have the meat for a party. So in honor of the lost, I have decided to dedicate this Power Point to that goat. The book does not say the goats name, so I name him Terach which means “wild goat”. Terach -- RIP

Basic Facts Goats are hollow-horned, bearded mammals of the genus Capra and the species Hircus. They are raised for wool, milk, and meat. They are also used to make gelatin and the manure is used for fertilizer. In some parts of the world they are used to pull carts. The natural life expectancy for goats is around 8 to 12 years, but sometimes goats can live over 15 years.

Funticular Facts Goats were the first animals to be used for milk by humans. There are over 210 breeds of goats in the world. There are about 450 million goats around the world. The act of giving birth is called “kidding.” Goats do not have teeth in their upper front jaw. Goats are quite agile creatures, and in some cases they can jump over 5 feet. Before coins were used for money, goats were traded for silver because they were so valuable.

Extraordinary Facts The pharaoh Cephrenes like his goats so much that he had 2,234 buried with him. A large group of goats is called a herd. *GASP* Really?

Healthy Facts Goat’s milk is easily digestible and less allergenic than cow’s milk. Goat’s milk is higher in calcium, vitamin A and niacin than cow’s milk. Goat meat is lower in fat and cholesterol compared to beef, pork, mutton and poultry. I have never tried goat meat, but goat cheese is delicious!

Mouth Watering Facts Worldwide, more people eat and drink milk from goats than any other animal. About 1.5 million pounds of goat meat is imported into the U.S. every week from Australia and New Zealand because domestic production and processing systems can not keep pace with demand. Goats vomiting is almost always because of poisonous plants.  Really mouth watering, huh?

Chugga chugga chugga chugga CHOO CHOO! The fastest train in the US is the electric Amtrak train. In the entire world, the German Intercity train is the fastest at 243 miles per hour in 1988.

Trains History The first safe train was built in England in 1829 by George and Robert Stephenson In 1868 the railroad was built all across America. The first diesel and electric trains were invented in the 1950's.
