 From the dawn of time man has evolved and animals.  From the smallest paddy field in China to the lush green valleys in Australia  Farming has evolved for the good of mankind but with consequences such as pollution to rivers and slaughtering cows.  People think farming is all fun and games but they’d be completely wrong.  The things we wear or use every day probably came from a farm like cotton and paper.  Living on a farm is very hard but it’s a beautiful affair as you can see the smallest bullock grow in to the most ferocious bull.  In my project I will talk about national and local farming.

 Cows are the most farmed animals in Ireland.  Cows in Ireland aren’t aloud wear horns.  You can get leather, beef and milk from a cow.  Did you know that there are 6.71 million cattle in Ireland.  Ireland have the best beef in the world.  Cows have a keen sense of smell from up to 5 miles.  A cow has 4 stomachs.  A cow can have up to 7 calves.  A cows average life span.  A holstein cow is the best cow for dairy.  A young female cow is called a heifer.  A castrated male cow is called a bullock.  A cow produces about 25 gallons of saliva a day.  An average cow weighs 1,400 lbs.  Cows can sleep while standing.

 There are 900 different breeds of sheep.  A lamb can identify her mother by her heart beat.  Ewes usually give birth to twins.  Sheep grow two teeth tell it has eight.  A one year old sheep is called a hogget.  A two year old sheep is called a two-tooth.  Sheep have hooves that are divided into two toes.  Did you know that sheep produce milk.  Did you know that there is sheep racing.  A group of sheep is called a flock.  In 1996 a sheep was cloned in Edinburugh.  Most people eat lamb but you could also eat mutton from a sheep.

 Like humans, pigs are omnivores which means they eat both plants and other animals.  A male pig is called boar and a female is called a gilt.  Pigs are ranked 4 in the intelligent animal list.  A baby pig is called a piglet and at birth it weighs 1.5kg and doubles in just 7 days.  Pigs have a great sense of smell,their powerful but sensitive stout is a highly developed sense organ.  Did you know not all pigs have curly tails.

 As we all know the famine had a lot to do with potatoes.  Did you know potatoes even grow on space.  Ireland is one of the top consumers of potatoes in Europe.  Carrots were first grown for medicine.  Wild rabbits do not eat carrots.  Three carrots give you enough energy to walk 3 miles.
