2 KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme LABORATORY FACILITIES

Learning Objectives At the end of this module, participants will be able to: Appreciate the importance of good design planning Relate how facility design impacts the efficiency and safety of laboratory workers. 3

Laboratory Design Design should consider: – Health & Safety regulations Fire, Biosafety, Chemicals, PPE, etc. – Equipment – Designated Lab activities. 4

Laboratory Design consider No hindrance to work or staff safety Activity segregation: – Sample reception – Sample processing – Molecular processes – Sterilisation & waste management 5

Physical aspects of Design Environment conducive to efficient operations: – Ensure proper ventilation. – Temperature & humidity must be controlled. – Adequate space for movement. – Painted with washable materials. – Floor must be easy to clean and disinfect. – Should not compromise the safety of the staff or the quality of analytical processes. 6

laboratory design Bench Tops non-porous covering easy to clean resistant to chemicals and disinfectants no wood, no steel 7

Laboratory Design Equipment – Ensure planning ensures adequate access for equipment entry, service & maintenance. – Carefully consider services requirements; UPS power, gases, water, ventilation etc – Management of waste disposal from equipment. 8

Laboratory design Access Control – Minimize access to authorised personnel only. – Avoid contact between public & biological materials.  Further restrictions to specific areas, eg CAT 3.

THANK YOU!!! 10
