Hygiene

What are we going to be learning about? Throughout the week, we are going to be learning about; hygiene and cleanliness, the affects of spreading germs and infections, how to avoid infection.

Germs! Infections or germs are found in many places, you may not be able to see them but they lurk in many different places all around! The main sources of infection are people, animals, contaminated raw food and also water. Places where water lie are often the main areas were germs multiply and grow.

Clean means Healthy! Germs are often found in places that are unclean, damp or warm… If we contract any form of germs then we may become very ill. Contact with germs can be caused by; not washing your hands, eating raw meat, uncleanliness whilst cooking, sneezing, contact with animals, or Airborne transmission on skin scales or from respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, talking or sweating.

Unwashed hands spread germs…

What are the effects of being unhygienic? Being unhygienic can lead to many different illnesses… Coughs and colds, Food Poisoning, Gastrointestinal infections (tummy upsets), severe stomach pains and diaorrhea.

How we can avoid spreading germs; Washing hands regularly, especially after being to the toilet and before cooking or eating, Ensuring that our toilets are clean and tidy, Never cook unless the kitchen is clean and the food has been stored correctly, Drink clean drinking water, Make sure that all school equipment is always clean and never put into any mouths, Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and ensure that clothes are washed in warm soapy water to kill germs, Never have contact or play near animal foul,

The 3 main ways of avoiding germs and illness… There are three main ways in which we can ensure that germs are not spread and reduce the chances of illness through infections. Cleaning – it is important that we all wash hands, cooking equipment, surfaces and resources such as toys to avoid contamination of germs and bacteria. This isn’t done through rinsing under water alone, we must use a cleaning product, warm water and scrub. This will avoid contamination of germs. Heat – Heating is an effective method of decontaminating items and foods. The higher the temperature achieved, the more germs are killed. Hygienic cleaners – These can be used to effectively kill germs where traditional methods of washing cannot be used. For example, cleaning products are good ways of killing germs on kitchen work surfaces before and after cooking.

Hand Hygiene

How should we wash our hands?

Food Hygiene Always wash your hands before you start cooking and after handling raw meat, Always keep raw meat away from cooked meat, Check use by dates on all foods, Keep your food in the right places: in the fridge if it says ‘Keep refrigerated’, or in the cupboard if it says ‘Store in a cool, dry place’. Always tie back long hair when cooking. Always disinfect and clean your cooking surfaces before preparing food, Can you think of any other rules about food hygiene?

Water Safety Always make sure that the water you drink is safe and clean. We are extremely lucky in the UK, our tap water is clean enough to drink. This isn't the case in many countries. Water in extremely scarce in many countries around the world. The water they have in many third world countries is often contaminated with bacteria that can cause deadly infections.

How you can keep yourselves clean… Wash your hands.

Wash your hair.

Brush your teeth.
