Increase awareness and knowledge among key target audiences (backyard farmers) of -high-risk behaviors for contracting avian influenza -practical preventive measures -how to recognize avian influenza in animals and humans -how to respond to cases of avian influenza in animals and humans BCC Objective

Audience Small rural backyard poultry raisers Semi commercial poultry (mostly duck) farmers Commercial farmers and poultry processors Consumers of poultry Business officials (public-private sector) Health and veterinarian workers (village to central level) Local authorities Other stakeholders General population

First KAP survey among backyard poultry farmers, December, 2005 Findings Farmers know about Avian Influenza and are very worried, but do not have correct information to act on reducing risks. Awareness is low that their animals can be infected, so they are not taking preventive actions. Messages 1. Fence poultry 2. Keep new poultry separated from other poultry for two weeks 3. Wash hands with soap after handling poultry 4. Keep yards clean and free from poultry excrement. Research
