When? Implementation August with current P7 pupils Implementation August with current P7 pupils The current proposal is for this cohort to be sitting new numeracy and literacy exams at the end of 3 rd year or during their 4 th year. The current proposal is for this cohort to be sitting new numeracy and literacy exams at the end of 3 rd year or during their 4 th year. “The expectation is that all young people will be presented for these awards” Proposed features of the new awards – –There will be separate awards for literacy and numeracy, both available at SCQF levels 3 to 5 – –The awards will accredit a broad range of skills on the basis of internally assessed evidence from a young person’s work across the curriculum and an externally assessed examination.

Numeracy Outcomes 12 Level 3 Numeracy Outcomes involving: 12 Level 3 Numeracy Outcomes involving: –Estimation and Rounding –Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division –Negative Numbers –Fractions, Decimals and Percentages –Ratio and Proportion –Money –Time –Measurement –Data and analysis –Ideas of Chance and uncertainty

“It ain’t nothing to do with me, ok?” Numeracy across the Curriculum

Who is meant to teach this? “ They don’t even know how to draw a bar graph? ”

What is the responsibility of subject departments?  Responsibility of all subject teachers and departments “all teaching staff have a role to play in developing literacy and numeracy “all teaching staff have a role to play in developing literacy and numeracy skills for our young people” - Building the curriculum 3 skills for our young people” - Building the curriculum 3  Advice will be given to subject departments in schools of appropriate methods that can be used when delivering these aspects of numeracy.  Singing from the same sheet “There should be coherence and consistency in the development of literacy “There should be coherence and consistency in the development of literacy and numeracy and other skills for life and skills for work.” and numeracy and other skills for life and skills for work.”  Positive impact on attainment.

Areas of responsibility and guidance to subject departments  Maths departments  Other subject departments  Consistent terminology and methodology.  Assistance for subject Departments

Calculation Strategies  Why do we need a consistent approach and common methodology? and common methodology?  What is 25 divided by 5 ?  Is it 14 ?

Did the characters in this video clip go to the same school?

Calculation Strategies Which department would be responsible for teaching pupils the knowledge and skills required for this question? Example A guitar is on sale in a music store priced at £168. The shop offers a discount of 15%. How much will the guitar cost?

Calculation Strategies Which department(s) would be responsible for teaching pupils the knowledge and skills required for this question? Example It has been suggested that global warming has increased the amount of rainfall we get in the Highlands and Islands. Some scientists are predicting that by 2050 the annual level of rainfall will have increased by as much as 15% in certain areas. Given that the current annual rainfall in the Highlands and Islands is approximately 3050millimetres, calculate the expected level in the year 2050 if the scientists are correct.
