For Potential Students: Questions to ask

“Is the program accredited?” In higher education there are two types of accreditation: Institutional (National): This kind of accreditation looks at an entire institution to measure whether it meets established standards of quality. Programmatic (Specialized): This kind of accreditation looks at specific programs within an institution, such as Diagnostic Medical Sonography, EMT-Paramedic, Medical Assisting and other health science disciplines.

So when you ask if they have accreditation, you also need to ask: “What kind of accreditation and by whom?” Institutional or national accreditation may be important for issues such as whether you will be able to get federal student aid. Programmatic accreditation may be important if you want to be eligible to sit for certification and licensure exams.

“Why choose an accredited program?” When a program is accredited you know that it has been reviewed by a panel of experts and that it has met national standards of quality. If the profession you wish to enter has licensure or certification, you will most likely need to graduate from an accredited program.

“How else can I be eligible for certification?” Questions about certification and what it takes to be eligible should be directed to the organization that does the testing and awards the certification. The CAAHEP website provides basic information on the profession and certification, along with contact information for certifying bodies of professions we accredit.
