The NHS Core Learning Unit (NHS CLU) was established in October The NHS CLU programmes have always been developed to policy and will continue to be so. All our programmes are accredited courses and are mapped to the key national standards such as: –NHS Knowledge &Skills Framework –Risk Management Standards of the NHS Litigation Authority –Standards for Better Health –Where relevant the Hospital Technical Memorandum

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE 1. Infection Control: clinical and non-clinical learning pathway –2 hours to complete the e-learning component, which the Chief Nursing Officer recommends every member of staff completes. The progression modules are for non-clinical staff and take approximately 6 hours –They are composed of a blend of delivery techniques: e-learning, facilitated face to face, group work, work based practice and videos. There are face to face materials for the whole programme –City and Guilds Level 2 or an online test and certificate. Part of Common Induction Award. £7.30 per module payable direct to C&G –4 further modules will be developed in 2008, for specific clinical interventions example Urinary Catheters and Central Venous Lines

Being Open –A blended learning programme which can take from 10 hours to several days –Will accredit with C&G –Developed in conjunction with National Patient Safety Agency

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE 11. Infusion Devices –A 40 hour learning programme with a blended learning approach, e- learning, face to face, all supported by work based practical Competencies. Programme designed for staff working with infusion Devices – usually staff at a post graduate level. Including social care staff –City and Guilds level 3. £22.70 payable to C&G –Developed in conjunction with National Patient Safety Agency 12. Medical Gasses for Nurses –A 2 hour e- learning programme –Working in partnership with BOC to develop learning material for porters and estates staff

CURRENTLY AVAILABLE 15. Foundation Degree Administration in the NHS – A 3 year foundation degree programme in partnership with Newcastle College. This can be accessed via our website with downloadable learning materials and tutor support from Newcastle College –Accredited by Newcastle College and validated by Leeds Metropolitan University –Launched October 2007

COMING SOON 16. Understanding Personal Safety and Security –An e-learning programme is under development with NHS CFSMS and expert reference group –Will be accredited by City and Guilds at level 2 – will be added to Common Induction Award when completed. £7.30 payable to C&G –Expert reference group scoped programme now in development – launch date scheduled for end of June Immunisation and Vaccination –A paper based programme developed by the Primary Care College in the North East. An expert ref group scoped the programme and will develop an e-learning version –Will seek accreditation from City and Guilds –Launch date scheduled for late autumn 2008

COMING SOON 18. Protection of Vulnerable Adults –Sourcing this programme at the moment –Will seek accreditation from City and Guilds –Aim to launch late autumn Public Health –Expert reference group scoping an awareness programme which will be for Health and Social Care. Adaptation of a level 3 programme which was created with NHSU and OU –Will be accredited with City and Guilds at level 2, and intended to be part of the Common Induction Award –Launch date scheduled for 1 July 2008

COMING SOON 20. Food, Nutrition and Hydration in Health and Social Care –E-learning programme designed for Health and Social Care under development at the moment. Scoped by expert reference group –One of several Essence of Care and Nutrition modules which will be developed –Launch scheduled for mid June Mentoring for Success –A paper based traditionally delivered programme with some work based learning and a workbook/portfolio. Aimed originally at support staff, but can be used in any role. Supported by CD Rom –Being negotiated –Launch date scheduled for July 2008

COMING SOON 23. Infection Control – further clinical modules –In development for specific clinical interventions, general principles of management of vascular access devices and urinary catheters. The first to become available will be an introductory module and 2 modules on central venous lines, followed by short term catheters. The waste and sharps module is currently being rewritten to meet new policy requirements –City and Guilds Level 2 or an online test and certificate. £7.30 per module payable direct to C&G –To be launched end of June 2008

My Learning –Click the My Learning tab to access your personalised training plan. This section is sub-divided into three areas to make it easier for you to find the courses, tutorials or exams you want to study.

My Courses This area provides an alphabetical listing of all the courses you have been assigned by your training administrator. A course is a group of tutorials and/or exams Green means that you have not started the course Yellow means that you have started, but not completed, the course Red means that you have completed the course

My Progress This section provides you with a detailed report of your training progress. The following information is provided: –Tutorials studied – this lists all the tutorials you have studied –Last study date – this details the last date you studied a given tutorial –Study time – this records the amount of time you spent studying each listed tutorial –Content viewed – this details the amount of content studied in a tutorial –Score – this gives you the score you received in the tutorial test, if applicable –Status – this gives you an indication of how far you progressed in a tutorial. The status may be: Passed: You have passed the tutorial test; Failed: You have failed the tutorial test; Completed: You have viewed all screens in the tutorial; Incomplete: You have viewed some screens but have not attempted the Evaluate phase

Benefits of using the CLU programmes –Affordable training solution –Staff receive the training that they require –The training is quality assured by ‘Expert Reference Groups’, which are made up of subject experts from the service. This means that you know the training that your staff receive is fit for purpose and responsive to any policy changes –As everyone receives the same high standard of training, this is therefore transferable amongst organisations –Learners can complete their training anywhere, anytime and at their own pace Blended approach –It is important to remember that all the programmes are designed to be as part of a blended approach to training –They are designed to provide everyone with the background level of knowledge they need so that local trainers are free to focus on other more specialised areas of training
