Before you can give to God, you must receive from God.
The Word, the Fellowship, Prayer, Singing, Receiving and Giving
Receiving the body and blood of Christ in the form of the bread and the cup.
Prior to this night, sins would be paid for by the sacrifice of an animal. After this night, sin would be paid for by the sacrifice of the God’s son.
Prior to this night, the focus would be on God setting slaves free from captivity. After this night, the focus would be on God setting captives free from sin.
Prior to this night, the focus would be on the Old Covenant in law. After this night the focus would be on the New Covenant in His blood.
Prior to this night relationships would be based on restitution and retribution, after this night relationships would be based on grace and forgiveness.
BEFORE we can give we must RECEIVE.
Luke 22:19–20 19 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 20 And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
Luke 22:21–23 (ESV) 21 But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22 For the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom he is betrayed!” 23 And they began to question one another, which of them it could be who was going to do this.
Luke 22:24 (ESV) 24 A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.
Luke 22:25–27 25 And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
Luke 22:28–30 (ESV) 28 “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, 29 and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Luke 22:31–33 (ESV) 31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.”
Before they can serve, they must receive. Before they can give the must receive.
This supper we eat today is the new Covenant in his blood. That Christ, first gave himself to us, so that we could give ourselves in service to others.
1 Corinthians 16:1–3 1 Now concerning the collection for the saints: as I directed the churches of Galatia, so you also are to do. 2 On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come. 3 And when I arrive, I will send those whom you accredit by letter to carry your gift to Jerusalem.
Giving releases the tight grip money has upon us.
2 Corinthians 9:6–12 (ESV) 6 The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. 9 As it is written, “He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.”
10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. 12 For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God.
Deuteronomy 14:22 (ESV) 22 “You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year.
God gives first, then we give out of what he gives us. Before we can give we must first receive from Him.
