NCOPE is… The National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization The corporation is organized and operated for scientific, educational & charitable purposes

NCOPE develops, applies, and assures standards for orthotic and prosthetic education through accreditation and approval to promote exemplary patient care. NCOPE’s Mission

History 1972 ABC created the Educational Accreditation Commission (EAC) to meet the O & P profession’s need for an institutional accreditation program EAC set out to establish criteria to assess and compare O & P curricula

History Cont’d 1991 EAC was recognized and became an independent organization under the National Office structure In December 1999 NCOPE became an incorporated accreditation agency and totally independent from the sister O&P organizations (AAOP, ABC and AOPA).

NCOPE has the following responsibilities: Promote education in the field of O & P and raise the standards of education in the field; Develop standards for, and accredit O & P programs; Establish accreditation and evaluation procedures in O & P education; Aid the development of new O & P programs; Publish an annual report on O & P education

NCOPE & CAAHEP The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is the largest specialized accreditation system in the country, accrediting educational programs in 18 disciplines CAAHEP reviews and accredits more than 2000 educational programs in twenty-two (22) health science occupations across the United States and Canada

11-13 member commission Two representatives appointed by ABC Two representatives appointed by the Academy Two representatives appointed by AOPA Three representatives from NAPOE (O&P Educators) Two public members Includes ABC-certified practitioners, O&P educators, curriculum specialists and academic administrators NCOPE’s COMPOSITION

SCHOOL UPDATE 10 currently accredited orthotic & prosthetic practitioner programs – 5 offer entry-level masters – 4 offer post baccalaureate certificate – 2 offer bachelor’s degree CURRENTLY pursuing accreditation – Loma Linda University

Update on Master’s All Programs to transition to Master’s by 2012 NCOPE allowing certificate programs (Northwestern, Newington, Century and Cal State) to continue to offer certificates through December 31, 2014 for those individuals extending credential only.

Residency Program Stats Currently 514 accredited residency sites 22 residency sites under review 531 positions in orthotics and 522 in prosthetics 338 to complete sometime in 2011 Over 2341 residents have completed training since NCOPE created Residency Standards

Residency is second half of an individual’s education and advancement towards becoming an O & P Professional Students must complete 250 Clinical Hours prior to start of residency Must register with NCOPE within the first 30 days of starting your residency Registration form Registration fee of $ Official Transcript (Undergraduate) Copy of certificate from Post Baccalaureate program Additional $75.00 for On-line tracking (paid to Typhon) Residency Program Overview

Residency Timeline

Residency Requirements Due at the end of 1 st quarter – 1 st quarter Evaluation on-line – Start thinking of a research topic Due at the end of 2 nd quarter – 2 nd quarter evaluation on-line – abstract coversheet with abstract online Due at the end of 3 rd quarter – 3 rd quarter evaluation on-line Due at the conclusion of residency – Final 12 month evaluation on-line. Including documentation of case presentation and community service requirements – Technical assessment on-line – Final Directed Study with Coversheet and statement form – Resident’s Evaluation of the Residency Program (as needed)

RESIDENTS WITH A START DATE OF JUNE 1, 2010 OR LATER ARE REQUIRED TO USE TYPHON. RESIDENTS AND PRACTITIONERS BOTH HAVE ROLES IN TYPHON You must register with NCOPE within the first 30 days of starting your residency program before you’re given access to the system

Who uses Typhon? Residents – Data Entry Log-in Residency Directors/Faculty – Sub Admin Log- in Dominique, Robin & Joan – Admin Log-in

Go to 1.Click on “Data Entry Log-in” 2.Enter facility number 9045, User Log in and Password (once registered, resident receives from Robin Seabrook containing this information) 3.Click “Log in” Getting Started with Typhon (residents)

System Information Access Fee of $75.00 The very first time a resident logs in, they are directed to an online payment page. Access fees must be paid by credit card (Amex, Visa, MasterCard or Discover) Access fee is separate from registration. Resident will have 3 years of access. Great for consecutive residencies. Session timed out message may appear – follow browser settings; Cache and Browser Portals are especially important. Session automatically times out after 60 minutes if no activity (data entered up until that point will be saved automatically) First time logging in, residents must set up defaults i.e., facility name, residency director, etc.

Entering Patient Encounters  Replaces Handwritten Daily Log – Prior to Typhon use NCOPE did not require residents to submit patient information  Get in the habit of doing today’s cases today- Procedures where resident observes is not necessary.  Printing and using “blank case log worksheet” to help remind you of the data for each patient

How to Enter a Patient Encounter/Case Log 1.From Main Menu, click Add New Case Log 2.Enter Date of Encounter and click SAVE CHANGES Don’t forget to monitor your “Missing Information Screen. Can back log 30 days

Entering Patient Encounters Blank Case Log Worksheets are available and are good for jotting notes for later Residency Director or program faculty should approve all cases entered Ability to run reports to see your overall statistics Create links between cases – Cases are filed by case ID number

Residency Director or faculty will log- in to initiate evaluation He/she will sign electronically using their password at the end Also, you can view the results of the evaluations and make comments about your evaluations. Quarterly Evaluations

From the Main Menu, click on My Evaluations & Surveys Abstract in Typhon 1.Click on NCOPE Abstract Cover Page 2.Answer the questions in the form 3.Paste or Type in abstract

RESIDENTS EVALUATION OF THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM Resident can now fill out as needed.

1. Residency Director/Faculty must log in to fill out this evaluation 2. Verification of the Case Presentation and Community Service Requirements were completed The Final 12 Month Evaluation Form
