Dilapidated Adjective In disrepair, partly ruined or decayed. The house is dilapidated from old age and weathering.

Ambiance Noun The mood or atmosphere of a place. The restaurant’s ambiance in bright and welcoming.

Congenial Adjective Agreeable, friendly The 4 congenial girls in the group let a 5 th girl join.

Rapacious Adjective Grasping or covetous, voracious. James had a very rapacious appetite for lunch.

Threshold Noun The opening or entrance to a gate, door, or hall. I walk through the threshold of Mrs. Sullivan’s classroom.

Tantalizing Adjective Possessing a quality that requires interest and desire. The way the waiter described the ice cream made it sound very tantalizing.

Emanate Verb To emit, come out of. My cat’s fur emanates a sweet smell.

Compensated Verb Reimburse, to pay back. I compensated my waiter for his good service with a generous tip.

Brandishing Verb Shaking or waving in a threatened manner. The rose bush kept its beautiful buds protected by brandishing its thorns.

Dingy Adjective Dirty, unclean The kitchen in the old house was dingy.

Unearthed verb Dug up or discovered. The archeologist unearthed a fossil from a dinosaur.

Reclusive Adjective Solitary or hidden from society. The Phantom of the Opera, who was grossly disfigured, remained reclusive from the rest of the world.

Unseemly Adjective Inappropriate Billy’s behavior was unseemly in math, and he got in trouble for being rude and disrespectful.

Tenuously Adverb Weakly The old woman climbed the stairs very tenuously; she barely made it. It was so difficult for her she needed to stop and rest in the middle.

Contorted Adjective Violently twisted The boy was impatient at the presentation so his contorted face showed his boredom.
