At the end of this class, participants will have a better understanding of the Standards For Required Professional Development For Teachers and how they relate to Summative Evaluation and PIP’s. OBJECTIVE

6A:9-15 Required Professional development for teachers (a) Each active teacher shall be required to complete 100 clock hours of State-approved continuing professional development and/or inservice every five years.... (b) The content of each teacher’s continuing education shall be specified in a Professional Development Plan (PDP) (c) The content of each teacher’s continuing education shall align with the Professional Development Standards for Teachers (d) The activities in each teacher’s Professional Development Plan shall align with the Professional Development Standards for Teachers as follows

THE ROLES AND WORK OF DISTRICT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

F Assess the professional development needs of staff F Develop the district professional development plan F Submit the district plan to the county board for approval ROLES OF THE DISTRICT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE

F Professional development must be consistent with the Standards for Professional Development F Professional development should include a variety of opportunities that deepen content knowledge and enrich pedagogical skills F Professional development should be tailored to unique needs of staff members

What Counts? F Two Interdependent Methods: - District Professional Development - The Professional Development Plan (PDP)

What Counts? F Categories of Professional Development: - Formal courses and conferences - Courses, seminars and activities for other license/certification maintenance

What Counts? F Categories of Professional Development: - Activities that serve the profession - Independent professional studies

INDEPENDENT STUDY REQUIREMENTS F The PDP must include a rationale describing consistency with the standards F The individual and supervisor must discuss the projected number of hours to be spent F The individual must maintain a log of hours completed

THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN

6A: Evaluation of Tenured Teaching Staff Members (f) The annual written performance report … shall include, but not be limited to: 1. Performance areas of strength; 2. Performance areas needing improvement based upon the job description; 3. An individual professional development plan developed by the supervisor and the teaching staff member; 4. A summary of available indicators of pupil progress and growth …

Evaluation of Tenured Teaching Staff Members (h) For the purpose of this section 3. “ Individual professional development plan” is a written statement of actions developed by the supervisor and the teaching staff member to correct deficiencies or to continue professional growth, timelines for their implementation, and the responsibilities of the individual teaching staff member and the district for implementing the plan;
