Canada’s New Flag Prior to the flag we know today, Canada’s flag was the Union Jack. Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson used the issue of a new national flag as a “political weapon” and was determined to have a new flag that featured a red maple leaf (Hilmer).
