The Big Picture-Feature and App Usage Google Earth Google Earth is the #1 downloaded travel app, with just under one-half of worldwide travelers who own a smartphone downloading it. At least one-half of travelers express interest in using their mobile phone to access General Travel Features. Weather Forecasts, Viewing Hotels on a Map, and Airport Map/Terminal Guide are the features with the greatest interest.
The Big Picture-Traveler Mobile Usage Profile Eight in ten Worldwide travelers own a smartphone (83%) Road Warriors (89%) and Casual Corporate (86%) travelers are more likely to own a smartphone than Leisure travelers (74%) Among travelers who own smartphones, the iPhone and Blackberry operating systems lead over all other operating systems Usage of Android OS phones is growing rapidly but in terms of the travel market, skews towards leisure travelers
The Big Picture-Where is this going? High membership in social networking is reported (72% have an account with Facebook.com). Travelers express interest in using social networking sites while traveling to read other people’s updates on their locations and to share photos, videos and stories about your trip. Travelers feel social networking will allow for faster/easier information sharing and will help to stay connected while traveling. One-third of worldwide travelers have accessed location based services.
The Big Picture-Feature and App Usage Travelers now require more than just information from their smartphones Booking Airline Reservations, Seat Selection and Searching Airlines’ Schedules, Prices and Availability are the most- requested air-related features Adding a hotel to an Existing Itinerary is the most desirable non-air searching/booking feature. Flight Check-In and Using a Mobile Device as a Boarding Pass are identified as the most desirable check-in features. Baggage Tracker Information and Receiving Driving Directions are the two most-requested ground features
