Section 7.1 Plan Your Career It is important to research and plan your career path. 2

Explore Your Options You can start thinking about and planning for your career now. Learn about the kind of education and training you need for the career you choose. Decisions based on specific skills can lead you to work you enjoy.

Explore Your Options There are tests that can help you discover your aptitudes. Create a portfolio to present your skills and abilities to future employers. aptitude A natural talent or ability for something. portfolio A neatly organized collection of one’s skills, experiences, and qualifications.

Research Careers Ask family members, teachers, and career counselors to help you identify skills and interests that would be useful when looking for jobs. What are some of your interests that you will consider in choosing a career? 6

Research Careers Learn about a job by: job shadowing. serving as an apprentice. job shadowing Spending time with someone to observe him or her on the job. apprentice Someone who works under the guidance of a skilled professional in order to learn an art, craft, or trade.

Research Careers Networking is a direct way to find a job. Find a mentor for inspiration and encouragement. networking Using personal connections to help achieve one’s goals. mentor Someone with experience who supports, advises, and encourages the progress of a less experienced person.

Research Careers Join professional organizations to meet people in the field that interests you. The Internet is an excellent place to learn about careers. You can submit job applications and résumés in person, through the mail, or online. 9

Section 7.2 Prepare for Work People work for many reasons and prepare for work in different ways.

Get Ready to Work Part-time jobs can help you: gain experience. learn to get along with others. find work that suits you. understand the qualities you might need for future work. 14

Get Ready to Work Technology skills are necessary in more jobs now than ever before. technology A manner of accomplishing a task using specialized processes, methods, or knowledge; equipment and machinery. What are some technology skills that you already possess?

Get Ready to Work Entrepreneurs are responsible for every part of their business. entrepreneur A person who starts and runs his or her own business.

Chapter Summary Section 7.1 Plan Your Career When you think about your career options, consider your strengths, interests, abilities, values, and goals. Begin thinking about the specific skills and the education and training you will need for the career you choose. As you study and gain work experience, put together a portfolio of your skills, experiences, and qualifications. Talk about career possibilities with your parents, family members, school counselors, and teachers. 17

Chapter Summary Section 7.2 Prepare for Work One of the first steps in finding a job is to consider your interests. Most people choose jobs based on their interests and skills. Without a high school education, job opportunities will be limited. There are many options for education after high school. Part-time employment is part of your preparation for full-time employment. Some people go out on their own as an entrepreneur. 18
