Are you tired of just running around during recess? If you are, here’s your chance to make a change! Our superintendent has enlisted your firm to come up with a design plan for a new playground on the field. You need to collaborate with your group to design a new playground, with a realistic budget.

As the designer of the playground you will need a solid understanding of the mathematical skills of volume, fractions, and decimals, as well as budgeting (money) skills. Many of the activities in this web quest will give you additional practice of these skills.

With a total area of 1500 ½ square feet, you will plan the play equipment to fit in this area. You will include equipment based on data collected. For each item you will need to label the volume (LxWxH) on the floor plan. You will need to figure the perimeter for the playground in order to place a fence around the entire space. You will create a proposal to present to the business administrator and members of the board office. In the proposal you will include your playground plan and budget combined with a persuasive presentation so the adults know why your design would be the best and most cost effective choice. BE CREATIVE!

Data Collection Find Dimensions with given Volume Research Create blueprint Create Budget Persuasive Presentation

Survey Create a survey to be administered school wide Survey playground equipment preference (Google Docs) Data Organize your data into a table and graph Evaluate graph to choose desired playground equipment for your blue print

With given area (1500 ½ sq. ft.) you must figure the dimensions (length, width, height) of your playground. You must find the volume for each piece of equipment. Take into consideration, maneuvering space between equipment for safety. Make sure your playground area is handicap accessible. You must also find the perimeter of your playground for fencing.

Once you have analyzed your data and calculated the dimensions, you are ready to start researching playground equipment and costs. Playground: Use various resources to search for playground equipment cost. Use budget plan to organize your information

Must be created on a spreadsheet (Google Docs) Budget plan should include: Final /Total cost of playground Breakdown of costs for each equipment and installation Equipment, dimension, cost

Once you have chosen your equipment and figured out the dimensions for all your equipment, you are going to create a blueprint of your playground. Blueprint should include but not limited to the following: All equipment with dimensions for playground placed in the appropriate location Handicap accessibility noted Any pathways or walkways highlighted

You must compile all the research and the final budget into a persuasive proposal. You may use any presentation media available for your proposal. Your presentation must include the following: Data Collected (Data Table and Graph) Complete Budget : Must include breakdown of equipment costs and installation costs Blueprint A copy of the blue print must be attached Persuasive Argument: Why should we pick your playground? Why is your proposal the best option? Is your playground cost effective? Does your playground consider handicapped students? Any other arguments that would persuade the Board of Ed. to consider your proposal.

Reflect on your experience working on this project. Did you enjoy working on this project? What did you find difficult about this project? Discuss any hardships and/or successes you had collaborating with a group. What is the most important lesson you learned from completing this project?
