Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” How Can We Save our House From the Flood? Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind/water from changing the shape of land. 2-ESS2-1 prepack Hello boys and girls, Before coming out to the Discovery Zone why not introduce yourself to some of the cool words we will be using. IVDZ

stream – a small river that has water moving from high to low ground. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” 2-ESS2-1 prepack Jimmy, Danny, and Marco dropped their model boat in the stream to see how fast the water was moving. Rivers, streams, creeks, and brooks all carry water from a higher place to a lower place.

channel – the bed where a stream of water runs A hundred years ago horses and Fresno Scrapers dug channels in Imperial for our canals. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ 2-ESS2-1 prepack Things were sure a lot harder then! How do you think it worked?

Erosion – the breaking down of rocks by weathering (water, wind, plant life, freezing, earthquakes) and the transport or carrying of the soil to another place. The mountainside created an arch from thousands of years of erosion to the rock. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ 2-ESS2-1 prepack I bet you can see evidence of erosion at your playground!

Sediment – pieces of rock that are eroded and carried away by water or wind and left somewhere else. Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ The sediment from the mountainside rested in the valley after the storm. 2-ESS2-1 prepack Pieces of soil Mixed in water Pieces fall to bottom to make sediment sediment Sediment is what is created by the weathering of rock. The small pieces broken off are carried off and fall when water slows or wind slows.

deposition – when sediments fall from slow moving water or wind. IVDZ Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” The geologist noticed a lot of deposition where the river emptied into the ocean. 2-ESS2-1 prepack Why do you think the sediment falls when the water or wind slows?

IVDZ Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” 2-ESS2-1 prepack The breaking down of materials such as rocks by wind, water, freezing, plant life, so on The movement of sediment or soil from one place to another by water, ice, or wind. When small pieces carried by water, ice, or wind are deposited or dropped in another place. Just a little review!

obstruction – something that blocks something else and makes it difficult for things to move through IVDZ Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” The driver had to slow down so she could go around the obstruction in the road. 2-ESS2-1 prepack Can you think of an obstruction that an airplane might have trouble moving through?

Remember these things when you Come out to the Discovery Zone. We’ll see you soon! Imperial Valley Discovery Zone “Inquiry Learning in Science” IVDZ 2-ESS2-1 prepack How Can We Save our House From the Flood? Compare multiple solutions designed to slow or prevent wind/water from changing the shape of land.
