Legacy of the 2012 Games Ben Plowden Director of Surface Planning Transport for London

2012 Games challenges

 On the Tube, 62 million journeys during the Olympics – 35% above normal. A record 4.57 million tube journeys on 7 August  On DLR, 6.9 million journeys during the Olympics – double normal levels  On London Overground, 6.3 million journeys during the Olympics – up 54% on 2011  86 million passengers on London Buses during the Games  Barclays Cycle Hire saw record usage - 1 million hires in a month (July)  An additional 1.03m walking & cycling trips per day during the Games compared to an average day in 2011 Breaking Records

Our research shows that:  Approximately 84% of freight operators and 89% of businesses were aware of the information available to help them plan for the Games  Only 20% of freight operators who made deliveries/collections during the Games had issues  Night time deliveries increased during the Games, with 17% of freight operators and 12% of businesses introducing or increasing our of hours deliveries  35% of London workers changed their travel behaviour on any given day  More than a fifth of employees (22%) worked from home and 28% changed the time they left for work  Businesses delivered a balanced blend of 4 R’s (Re- time, Re-route, Reduce, Re-mode) Achievement

 The ‘burning platform’ of The Games was the catalyst to successful engagement with London businesses  Our challenge: why should business continue to work in partnership with TfL in the future?  Increased demand 12% or 940,000 more people using the network by 2031  30% increase in freight deliveries in next 20 years  Transformation of the network will create ongoing challenges  Broad range of long term benefits for business (e.g. reduced costs and absenteeism)  Working with TfL to address these challenges will help to reduce the impact on London’s economy Post Games challenge

 New ‘Cycling Vision’ – 10 year plan with significant budget £913M  Extension of Barclays Cycle Hire scheme continues  Prudential RideLondon will take place on a course taking in the Olympic Park, central London and Surrey from 2013  New Roads Safety Action Plan published  New Roads Task Force Strategy announced yesterday  Planning for Ultra Low Emission Zone proposed from 2020  Enhanced Freight Team and strategy  New Travel Demand Management (TDM) team Legacy in action

TDM and Freight  TDM and freight engagement will enable TfL to manage increased demands on the network  We will provide specific, targeted and timely information to businesses around planned works such as London Bridge upgrade (in partnership with Network Rail)  Enable stakeholders to plan for events that impact their operations e.g. Prudential RideLondon  Work with businesses to ease congestion in hotspot areas e.g. southern section of the Northern Line

9  Dedicated TfL team of 10 people on call to help all businesses across London  Best practice guidance e.g. flexible working, active travel, business travel  Toolkit support e.g. sustainable fleet management, cycling in the workplace  Cycle parking and employee cycle skills training delivered directly at the workplace  Initiatives to improve road safety at work  Regular updates e.g. travel disruption, planned road closures and details of support available online and via Supporting business
