Public survey Question: 1. Is there correlation between energy consumption (generation) and global warming? 2. Without doing anything do we survive with global warming? © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

Availability 24/7 Reliability – no blackouts Quality – V, f, upper and lower harmonics Limitless connection of small RES plants Limitless connection of electrical cars Stock exchange view: Electricity price must be communicated in every quarter -> every minute No CO2 and other GHG emission No senseless heat emission No other enviroment pollution Requirements agains the electrical network – from society point of view 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design

CO2 and other GHG emission Regulation flexibility is strongly limited. It limits the small plants’ connection potential to the grid. The (middle) long term strategy has to involve RES plants because of CO2 and other pollution issues as well as global warming…. And environmental problems aren’t solved yet… Grid is not prepared to e-mobility. Issues with current electrical enegy generation and TS DS systems © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

ICT as online industrial control application New sensors, measurement and monitoring systems Upgraded energy generation, storage and transmission technologies and systems e-mobility Superconductive material applications The solution is given - SmartGrid concept SmartGrid involves sustainable technologies © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

SmartGrid features © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

SmartGrid is the 21th Century’s concept for electrical energy generation and distribution systems’s realization. It involves additional services and technologies enabling higher energy security and reliability, reducing transmission costs and supports sustainable technologies application. These sustainable technologies are the RES (small) plants and limitless grid connection of these, electro mobility and other new energy storage, transmission and regulation technologies. SmartGrid definition © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

Why „Smart”? Intelligent control for energy generation, transmission and storage in order to balance; production and comsumption in every moment; Able to heal smaller system failures automatically; Energy efficient, thus „ECO” friendly; Flexible, sustainable, future-proof; „The overall social cost” must be cheaper than current grid and it’s running technologies. SmartGrid features © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

How to start to desing a SmartGrid project? Source of the money – EU /EEA grants Must be „profitable” (what is the value of the human life on Earth?) Must be feasible (PEST analysis) Stakeholders wants to realize profit Pilot project which demonstrates repeatability and sustainable solution SmartGrid features © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

How big is a powerful SmartGrid project? In electrical power level Number of participating generators and consumers (in longer term these must be extendable without technological limitations) Territorial optimization Optimal SmartGrid pilot project features © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

„Golden Middleway” solution Project leader: State/governmental institute Involves limited number of state owned companies dedicated for pilot project. Middle project size („not too big”, „not small”) Central geo location (further system extension should be considered) Central core network realization „In the middle of the energy flow” A proposal: National-wide SmartGrid pilot project © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, 2014.

A proposal: National SmartGrid Technology Institute © Istvan Szabo: Sustainable SmartGrid Project Design 23rd Forum, Dan Energije u Hrvatskoj, Zagreb, November 28th, Mastermind, think tank Advisory role for administration Representing the Country interests Considering and maintaining future generations’s interests Project generator Project realization as leader
