The suffix ly means in a certain way.(Adverb) Quickly means in a quick way. Loudly means in a loud way. What does suddenly mean? The suffix ful means full of.( Adjective) Colorful means full of color. Playful means full of play. What does thankful mean?

The Objectives : 1- Use knowledge of prefixes to help determine the meaning of words 2- Understand sound / spelling correspondences

Mono / Uni = one Monolingual Using only one language Monologue A long speech by one person

Mono / uni= one Monopoly The control of an industry by one company. (monopolize) Monosyllable A word that has only one syllable. Unicorn One horn ( animal).

Uni/ one Unilateral Done by one of the sides. Unison In one sound / together.

Tri/ three Triangle A shape that has three sides and three angles. Trilogy A group of three books. Triple Made of three parts.

Multi/ many Multimedia Involving several different methods of communication. Multinational Involving many countries. Multiple Having many parts.

Semi/ half Semicircle One half of a circle. Semifinal One of the 2 matches after which the winners play in the final.

Bi/two Bilingual Using 2 languages. Binoculars An instrument with 2 lenses which you look through to make distant objects seem nearer. Bigamy Being married to 2 women.

A base word is a word in its simplest form. A base word has nothing added to it. Examples: Do Heat Write Read Pack

Prefixes are added to the beginning of a base word. They change the meaning of the base word. Un + happy = unhappy Re + do = redo

Prefixes The prefix re means again. Reread means to read again. Rewrite means to write again. What does reheat mean? The prefix un means not or the opposite of. Uncomfortable means not comfortable. Unpack means the opposite of pack. What does unclear mean?

Prefixes Add a prefix to the beginning of each word to make a new word. Draw a line form the word to its meaning. ____do ____happy ____clear ____read ____pack The opposite of pack Do again Opposite of clear Read again Not happy

Suffixes are added to the end of a base word. They change the meaning of the base word. ( adjective) wonder + ful = ( full of) wonderful rest + ful = restful
