Types of Word Parts Three types of word parts may be used to create medical terms. Wood roots contain the basic meaning of the term.  Usually, but not always, indicate the involved body part. Suffixes usually, but not always, indicate a procedure, condition, disorder, or disease.  A suffix is always at the end of a word.

Word Parts Prefixes, usually, but not always, indicate location, time, number, or status.  A prefix always comes at the beginning of a word. Combining vowels are needed between word root and suffix to make the medical term easier to pronounce.

Word Part Guidelines A word root cannot stand alone. A suffix must be added to complete the term. When a prefix is necessary, it is always placed at the beginning of the word.

Combining Vowel Guidelines A combining vowel is used when the suffix begins with a consonant. A combining vowel is not used when the suffix begins with a vowel (a,e,i,o,u) A combining vowel is always used when two or more root words are joined. A prefix does not require a combining vowel.

Suffix Suffix is a group of syllables attached to the end of a word Suffix is attached to the root of the word When pronouncing a word generally you will begin with the meaning of the suffix and then to the prefix and root

Suffix Examples Algia Al, ic, ous Ology Ologist pathy scope itis trophy

Prefix Prefix attaches to the beginning of the word and combines with the root Prefixes like suffixes can have more than one meaning which can alter the meaning of the word

Prefix Examples A An Epi, sub Dys Micro Bi, tri Pre/post hyper/hypo

Word Roots Word roots act as the foundation of most medical terms. Word roots usually, but not always, describe the part of the body that is involved.

Word Root Examples Cardi Hepat Gastr Cyan Leuk Lith nephr
