Nomenclature of Acids and Molar Mass

What is an acid and how do you name an Acids? (p ) An acid is a Hydrogen donor Rule 1 : No oxygen in anion, than use the prefix hydro- to the root name and the suffix –ic HCl = hydrochloric acid HCN = hydrocyanic acid H 2 S = hydro sulfuric acid Rule 2: Anion contains Oxygen (oxyanions), Use the root name of the central atom with a suffix of –ic or –ous. *When the anion ends in – ate use the –ic suffix H 2 SO 4 = sulfuric acid H 3 PO 4 = phosphoric acid HC 2 H 3 O 2 = acetic acid *When anion ends in –ite, the suffix –ous is used H 2 SO 3,= sulfurous acid HNO 2 =nitrous acid

Finding the Molar Mass Also known as Molecular weight or Formula Weight Hydrochloric acid For H + + Cl -  HCl Contains 1 H atom and 1 Cl atom 1 mol H + = 1.01g H + 1 mol Cl - = 35.45g Cl - 1 mol of HCl = 36.46g of HCl For Sulfurous Acid = H 2 SO 3 Contains 2 H atoms 1 S atom and 3 oxygen atoms 2 mol of H = 2(1.01g of H) = 2.02g of H 3 mol of O = 3(16.00gO) = 48.00g O 1 mol of S = g S 1 mol of H 2 SO 3 = 82.09g of H 2 SO 3

Practice Problems Name the following acids and find the molar mass for the Acid. 1) HBr 2) H 3 PO 4 3) H 3 PO 3 4) HCl 5) HClO 2
