In 1493 Pope Alexander VI divided the non-Christian world between Spain and Portugal – the Line of Demarcation. Portugals’ protests lead to the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494 which pushed the line 1000 miles to the west. Spain was granted lands to the west and Portugal to the east.
