A-national team 2006 Roy Hodgson Valmentajapäivät 2006

Team Coaching Development of a playing system Three Components - Players who make up the team - Principles: a) play b) leadership - Coaching philosophy Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

1. Players who make up the team - How to pick the best players and retain balance in team - Experience v youthful enthusiasm - Tactical choises bring advantages and disadvantages a) use of three forwards b) use of two wingers c) attacking full-backs - Inherited players or spesific chosen ones - ”Smaller clubs, Federations have a limited choice. May need to sacrifice playing ideals to get the best out of material available” - Need of squad players Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

2.1. Principles of play - What you believe in - Fundamental to your game plan - Relevant in all situations - Core factors Defending: a) Compact play b) Decision making/ Reading the game c) Marking distances d) Blocking e) Recovering position f) Awareness of danger g) Accepting 2nd place h) Supporting positions i) Rebounding j) Technique Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

2.1. Principles of play Attacking: CFC Hughes: ”There is no system which will cater for players who cannot pass the ball or support each other” a) Passing and support b) Positive play c) Co-ordinated movements – creating passing alternatives d) Crossing and shooting e) Awareness of counter attacking possibilities f) Acceptance of responsibility g) Rebounding h) When to run with the ball Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

2.2. Principles of leadership - Why they should trust and follow you - Requires work and thought - Some commonly accepted leadership qualities or requirements might be: a) respect b) consistency c) acceptance of responsibility d) ability to take unpopular decisions e) refusal to accept behaviour which threatens the group f) avoidance of favouritism g) leading by example h) develop people skills ” A leader is best when people hardly know he excists. Not so good when people feel they must obey and honour him; even worse when they hate him. When good leader’s work is done the people will say: we did it ourselves” Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

3. Coaching philosophy - How do you get your message across - How do you sell your ideas and convince players - Practical application to your playing principles and beliefs - Process of education - Basic requirements: a) knowledge of your subject b) ability to plan c) ability to prepare d) ability to organize e) ability to communicate – make players understand f) ability to enthuse and inspire g) add your own favourites to this list Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

3. Coaching philosophy - Many aspects we could talk about: a) training dosage b) what to work on c) when to work on d) how much time on each element - physical conditioning - technique - tactical understanding e) achieving the balance in the programme Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

3. Coaching philosophy - What kind of coach you are?: a) field coach b) talker / theory man c) games man d) become friend of president e) become friend of the best player Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

Major considerations for a national team coach - Making good use of limited preparation time - Where to place tactical emphasis - Player availability - Which practise to use in order to work on the desired subject - How much theory and when - Maintaining a balance and sense of perspective - Avoidance of over ambition - Not paying enough attention to squad players and bruised egos - Avoidance of lateral damage to group (press, sponsors, family and friends) Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

Summary of what I consider the most important factors in any coaching job - Ability to plan and prepare ” everyone has the will to win, but few have the will to prepare” - Put yourself in players shoes - We are the circus masters, not the performers - Ability to enthuse and to inspire - Winning people’s trust and respect - Ability to identify the key factors in a team’s performance and then find ways to work at them - Creation of a good learning environment - Remaining a student of the game Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006

Easy to talk about what one should do, more difficult in reality. I have tried to highlight the areas I deem to be important, but have only scratched the surface of this vast and interesting topic. Time for questions and perhaps more detailed examination of what I have been talking about Quotation: ” I don’t believe in team motivation. I believe in getting a team prepared, so it will have the necessary confidence to step on to the field and to play a good game. If you can get players ready, prepared for all situations they will have to face, then they will be motivated” Roy Hodgson valmentajapäivät 2006
