Literary Focus: Suspense: anxious curiosity that hooks the readers’ interest Foreshadowing: writers drop clues that hint at what may happen later; this intensifies suspense

George Toudouze 1847- 1904 Born in France Playwright, essayist, and illustrator Interest in the sea and worked in the French navy

Basic Situation: Characters: 1) Narrator: young man who took a job at a lighthouse to earn money for upcoming marriage 2) Le Gleo: a Breton (France) 3) Ichty: a Basque, head keeper, oldest

Basic Situation: Setting: 1. Time: late 1800s 2. Place: key off of French Guiana (South America); lighthouse

Complications: The smell of the rats is horrible, and the men are sealed in the lighthouse. 2. The men begin to tease the rats. 3. The rats begin to eat away at the window frames. 4. Nightmares, madness, and no supply boat for 29 days!
