Axial Skeleton Study Guide

The Skull What are the major components of the axial skeleton? What structures do they protect? What is a suture? Name the four sutures and the bones they connect What are the eight bones of the cranium? What is the function of the paranasal sinuses?

The Skull Know all bone names and their descriptions (matching) Be able to label all bone names on a picture of a skull (anterior view)

Fetal Skull Compare the fetal skull to an adult skull Fontanels: definition, fate, function Given a picture of a fetal skull, locate the fontanels

The Vertebral Column Be able to identify the vertebral areas of a typical vertebrate. Match distinguishing characteristics of a vertebrae to the structure or region. Label the type of vertebrate shown and label its parts. Know what kind of tissue makes up the intervertebral discs. Describe a herniated disc and problems it may cause Shown a picture of a spine, identify each structure.

The Bony Thorax Know the major components of the bony thorax What is the shape of the thoracic cage? Shown a picture of a bony thorax, identify the regions.
