Service Learning Project Campbell County Animal Shelter

What is Service Learning? Service learning is a method of learning that combines service to the community with classroom curriculum. It is a hands-on approach to learning and helps students fulfill their responsibility to the community in which they live.

Did You Know? About 63 percent of all households in the United States have a pet. Approximately 5 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. For a wide number of reasons, many animals find themselves without a loving home.

The Service Learning Project The sixth grade language arts students will be working hand-in-hand with the Campbell County Animal Shelter to help care for the homeless animals of our community. In order to properly care for the animals at the shelter, the shelter relies on donations from the community.

Donations We will be collecting the following donations from the Campbell County Animal Shelter: –Laundry Detergent/Bleach –Liquid Soap –Used Towels/Blankets –Dog/cat food –Dog/cat toys –Dog/cat Treats –Cat Litter (no clump)

In the Classroom This service learning project will tie in with Unit 3 of our Language Arts Lab classes. In Unit 3, you will be required to produce the following: –Argument piece centered on topics that surround the need for animal shelters –Visual/Media presentation about your argument topic

What We Will Learn The purpose of this service learning project is to create an argument piece and digital/media presentation that will persuade people about our chosen topics. And the BEST part is, we are helping to care for the animals of our community until they find a home.

Let’s Brainstorm! There are a number of topics that center on the need for animal shelters in our communities. Here are some ideas to get us started: –Spaying/neutering pets –House training/behavior training
