In this PBL, you will be do the following: Determine the basic needs for survival. Research and devise a written plan explaining how these needs will be met. Compile the information acquired by your team to create a wilderness survival handbook. Create a wilderness survival kit and go on a “virtual shopping spree” for the items. Test your knowledge of survival skills by completing a quiz. (After reading TASK, click on PROCESS in the toolbar above.) Task

Process Many of us take our daily survival needs for granted. It is not until we are in a time of need that we remember the importance of dependable shelter, nutritious food, clean water, adequate clothing and companionship. We sometimes forget that without these necessities, survival would be a difficult or a nearly impossible task. If you suddenly found yourself thrust into a survival situation, such as being lost in the woods, do you think you would be able to make it? Could you find food and purify water? Could you build a shelter or make a fire? Would you know how to attract attention so someone could find you? Do you have any first aid knowledge to help yourself in case of injury? Would you be able to remain calm enough to think about how to do any of these things? Suppose the only tools you had on you were your own two hands! Feeling a bit unprepared? The following tasks are designed to help prepare you with the knowledge needed to increase your chances of survival in the event that you someday find yourself facing a situation in which you must rely on your personal and environmental resources in order to sustain life. Directions: Use the tool bar at the top of each page OR on the home page to select tasks 1-5. Each of the five tasks are to be completed in sequential order.

Task 1 Gathering Information A.Now that you are on a survival team, you will use the web sites below to try and determine basic elements of survival. Hint: there are six basic elements of survival, can you figure them out? Put your research information and list of 6 basic elements on a separate WORD document. B.After you have listed your six basic elements of survival, your team must now determine the characteristics of an effective attitude needed for survival. In order to survive, attitude is important (hopefully, it is one of your six basic elements). Use the psychological web sites below to gather information on the importance of attitude. Put your research information on your WORD document. Get as much as you can....you will need research for future tasks. C.When exploring a website, make sure you examine the site carefully to access all possible information. When you are done, go to Task 2. Use the websites below to gather your information. Task 2 Each member of your team will be responsible for researching one of the basic elements (did you find all six? are they correct?) AND writing a detailed paper describing a plan of action for meeting this need based on the information provided on the websites from the TASK ONE PAGE. The paper will be typed on a WORD document. It will be 5 paragraphs; one intro and one conclusion, three body. Each body paragraph will have 5 or more sentences full of details and examples. Make your paper well written and be ready to hand in to teacher. You will be writing individually, but can get assistance from your Survival group. Research and devise a written plan explaining how these needs will be met.

Task 3 Compile the information on survival from each of your group members. Create a survival handbook using one of the following options: 1.PowerPoint Brochure - (handmade or computer generated) 2.Pocket flip chart Compile the information acquired by your team to create a wilderness survival handbook.

Create a wilderness survival kit and go on a “virtual shopping spree” for the items. Task 4 Use the knowledge you have acquired through your research to create a survival pack that could be used to assist you in surviving. A.Select and name the type of disaster you will be surviving and for which you will be creating a survival kit. For example, are you surviving a tornado? a snowstorm? being lost in the woods? (write this at top of form next to your name) B.On The Official Survival Pack Inventory Sheet, make a list of the items in your survival pack (pictures optional).The Official Survival Pack Inventory Sheet C.Find that item on line and tell where it can be purchased and the purchase price; and list the reason you think you need this item. D.There needs to be a completed shopping list and a money total for purchased items (add at bottom of sheet). Remember this is a virtual shopping spree; do not really buy anything.
