Activity 14 Breakdown Pages B-19 to 22 WD

Main Ideas  Graphing data can reveal patterns that are not apparent from data tables.  Each system within the human body is defined by the functions that it performs. For example, the digestive system is a group of organs, each of which contributes to the process of breaking down food into smaller particles. For example, the digestive system is a group of organs, each of which contributes to the process of breaking down food into smaller particles. For example, the digestive system is a group of organs, each of which contributes to the process of breaking down food into smaller particles. WD

Main Ideas cont.  Creating models is one way to understand and communicate scientific information.  Both mechanical and chemical processes contribute to the breakdown of food.  Chemical reactions occur at surfaces. The greater the surface area available for contact, the faster the reaction. This is why mechanical breakdown facilitates chemical breakdown. WD

Vocabulary  Control  Digestive System  Function  Hypothesis  Model  Organ  Qualitative/Quantitative Data  Variable WD*

Vocabulary Cont.  Mechanical Breakdown*-Occurs when you chew your food. Gets help from your teeth and tongue. Also continues in the stomach where stomach churns the food around.  Chemical Breakdown*-Occurs when substances in your body breakdown food into even smaller particles. Chemical breakdown begins in the mouth, but occurs mostly in your stomach and intestines. WD*

Challenge Question  By the end of this activity you should be able to answer this question… Why is it important to chew your food?

Practice!!!  Read the procedure. Follow the directions in your group.  Record your observations.  For Part 2: You will need a lab sheet. lab sheetlab sheet

What do I do?  Do part 2, GET MY APPROVAL FIRST!!!  Be sure to answer the bulleted questions in your notebook and create your hypothesis.

Analysis  Do #1 and #2 with your group.  Do #3, #4, and #5 alone.

Challenge Question  Your should be able to answer this question now!!!! Why is it important to chew your food?
