Chapter One- My Father Meets the cat Elmer found a cat in the street. He took the cat home. Elmer asked his mother for a saucer of milk. His mother wouldn't let him keep the cat. So Elmer hid him in the cellar. His mother found the cat’s saucer of milk and whipped Elmer and threw the cat out the door. The cat talked about Wild Island and how Elmer could fly.

Chapter 2- My Father Runs Away Elmer ran away on a boat to Wild Island. Wild Island had a big muddy river. Earlier, the cat told Elmer about a dragon that was trapped on Wild Island. Elmer wanted to save the dragon from all the wild animals on Wild Island.

Chapter 3 – My Father Finds the Island Elmer got on the boat to Wild Island without being caught. He put a sack over himself so he would not get caught on the boat. He arrived at Wild Island a few days later.

Chapter 4- My Father Finds the River Elmer thought about finding the river because the dragon was tied to a tree on the other side. He met two boars and a mouse and two turtles. He had to go through the jungle to find the dragon.

Chapter 5- My Father Meets Some Tigers. Some tigers found Elmer in the jungle. They were going to eat him unless he gave them something to eat. He gave them some gum the cat had told him to bring so they would not eat him.

Chapter 6- My Father Meets a Rhinoceros Elmer found a rhinoceros by the river when he stopped to get a drink of water. The rhino saw Elmer and scooped him up with his horn. The rhino said his horn was dirty and then put Elmer down. Elmer offered to give him something to clean it. He gave him a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Chapter 7- My Father Meets a Lion Elmer met a lion. The lion growled at him and planned to eat him. The lion told Elmer that his mane was ratty and his mother is coming. Elmer said he had something for the lion and gave him a comb and a brush. The lion groomed his mane and Elmer escaped.

Chapter 8- My Father Meets a Gorilla While walking in the jungle on his way to the river, Elmer met a big gorilla. Elmer gave some monkeys magnifying glasses to find where fleas were on the gorilla’s chest. My father found the crossroads to see how to get to the river.

Chapter 9- My Father Makes a Bridge Elmer tricked the crocodiles into making a bridge by giving them lollipops to make a line across the river. He climbed across their backs to get to the other side of the river where the dragon was tied up!

Chapter 10- My Father Finds the Dragon At last, Elmer crossed to the other side of the river. It was hard finding the dragon but he finally found him tied to a tree. The dragon was in misery and pain. The other animals on Wild Island tried to cross the river to stop Elmer from freeing the dragon and escaping with him. Elmer flew away into the sky with the dragon!
