6:42 – 49 January 12, 2014

“We’re all good people who sometimes do bad things.” 1) Treat others as God has treated us. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. 3) Receivers should be givers. 4) Leaders should lead themselves. 5) Good trees should produce good fruit. “We’re all good people who sometimes do bad things.” 6:43 - 49 JHK

6:47 - 49 5) Good trees should produce good fruit. “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:43-45) 6:47 - 49 JHK

5) Good trees should produce good fruit. ► Jesus is once again using hyperbole here. ► We don’t need modification, we need regeneration. “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.” (Luke 6:43) “…he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit…” (Titus 3:5 ESV) 6:43 - 49 JHK

6:43 - 49 5) Good trees should produce good fruit. ► Jesus is once again using hyperbole here. ► We don’t need modification, we need regeneration. ► There are only two types of trees. “No good tree bears bad fruit…” (Luke 6:43a) “Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers.” (Luke 6:44) καλός (kalos) - “good” •genuine, approved, noble. •such as one ought to be. σαπρός (sapros) - “bad” •rotten, decayed, worthless. •corrupted and unfit for use. 6:43 - 49 JHK

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love…” (Galatians 5:22a) 5) Good trees should produce good fruit. ► Jesus is once again using hyperbole here. ► We don’t need modification, we need regeneration. ► There are only two types of trees. ► The heart is the key to determining the “tree’s” fruit. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” (Ezekiel 36:26) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love…” (Galatians 5:22a) 6:43 - 49 JHK

6:43 - 49 5) Good trees should produce good fruit. ► Jesus is once again using hyperbole here. ► We don’t need modification, we need regeneration. ► There are only two types of trees. ► The heart is the key to determining the “tree’s” fruit. ► The heart is revealed by the words we use. 6:43 - 49 JHK

5) Good trees should produce good fruit. ► The heart is revealed by the words we use. “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.” ἀγαθός (agathos) - “good” •of good constitution, useful. •upright, honorable. πονηρός (poneros) - “evil” •bad, diseased, blind. •wicked, evil, bad. 6:43 - 49 JHK

5) Good trees should produce good fruit. ► The heart is revealed by the words we use. “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart.” καρδία (kardia) - “heart” •inmost part. •center of physical and spiritual life. θησαυρός (thesauros) – “stored up” •storehouse. •place where valuables are kept. 6:43 - 49 JHK

6:43 - 49 1) Treat others as God has treated us. 2) Forgiven people should forgive. 3) Receivers should be givers. 4) Leaders should lead themselves. 5) Good trees should produce good fruit. 6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. 6:43 - 49 JHK

6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46) When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some of them sneered, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this subject.” At that, Paul left the Council. Some of the people became followers of Paul and believed. (Acts 17:32-34a) 1) Rejected. 2) Unsure but willing to listen to more. 3) Heard, believed and obeyed. 6:43 - 49 JHK

6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46) κύριος (kyrios) - “Lord” • the owner, one who has control over, the master. • the sovereign, prince, chief. יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהִים (Yahweh elohim) - “Lord God” • the “self-existent” one. • the personal name of God. “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created, when the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.” (Genesis 2:4) 6:43 - 49 JHK

6:43 - 49 6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46) ποιέω (poieo) - “do” • to carry out, execute. • to perform according to a promise. “…this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you - not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God.” (I Peter 3:21) 6:43 - 49 JHK

“As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” 6:43 - 49 JHK

But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” 6:43 - 49 JHK

“In this world you will have trouble.” (John 16:33) 6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. “They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock.” (Luke 6:48a) “In this world you will have trouble.” (John 16:33) 6:43 - 49 JHK

6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. ► “Heedless disciples” is an oxymoron. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46) ox·y·mo·ron – noun A figure of speech by which a locution produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect. 6:43 - 49 JHK

6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. ► “Heedless disciples” is an oxymoron. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46) “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22) 6:43 - 49 JHK

Result depends on sagacity of builder 6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. ► “Heedless disciples” is an oxymoron. “When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.” “The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20a) Result depends on sagacity of builder 6:43 - 49 JHK

6:43 - 49 6) Truth plus obedience is a solid foundation. ► “Heedless disciples” is an oxymoron. ► Everyone is building a house with their life. ► Religion means nothing when the torrent comes. “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21) 6:43 - 49 JHK
