REPORT ON PROGRESS, CHALLENGES AND OBSTACLES THE PROGRAM IN THE TEACHING OF SCIENCE IN SCHOOL DOMINICAN REPUBLIC "IN CONNECTION WITH THE VII MEETING OF THE FOCAL POINTS IN SCIENCE EDUCATION PROGRAM OF IANAS, JUNE 2010 Rio de Janeiro, BRAZIL Dr. Nelson Moreno Ceballos President of the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic Scientific Chairman of the Wider Caribbean Community (CCC)

Signature of agreement between the Mexican Academy of Sciences and Academy of the Dominican Republic as of November 21, 2007, Mexico.

We proceeded to sign an interinstitutional agreement between the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic and the Ministry of Education.

Opening of the educational workshops

Creation of the National Committee for Support of the "Science Teaching in Schools, February 2009, after two years of work.

This committee is composed of: Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic (ACRD) Ministry of Education (SEE) Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology (SEESCYT) Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD) Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña (UNPHU) Institute of Integral Health and Development (INDESUI) and the National Council of Businessmen (CONEP)

Steering Committee Meeting

Training of 61 teachers and technicians from the Ministry of the Dominican Republic by five experts from Chile, Colombia and Mexico. Participants were presented with the experiences of these countries.

Involved public authorities and the National Committee began with the training that included all teachers, technicians from the Ministry of Education, the UASD, the UNPHU and the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic.

Training of 60 teachers from 12 schools: Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics June-July 2009.

The 2nd training to 250 teachers at the Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), Dominican Republic, from 4 to August 7, 2009

The National Committee prepares critical path to start the pilot program in the school year 9 Public Schools 2 Experimental High Schools and Private State University A Catholic College

A program to develop in 2010 the Program (ECBI). 12 schools selected for the Pilot Program in Science Teaching in Schools, Dominican Republic. Dominican Republic Elementary School Republic of Nicaragua Elementary School Chile's Basic School Basic School Prof. Juan Bosch Cristo Rey Parish Primary School School of Early Education and Basic Leoncio Manzueta (Santa Cruz) Domingo Moreno Jimenez Basic School Luis Arturo Bermúdez Elementary School Basic School Wall San Jose School School of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo Liceo Experimental National University Pedro Henríquez Ureña.

In the second period, we intend to integrate the two main universities in the training of teachers in the Dominican Republic in their curricula ECBI Method. UASD UNPHU

It was agreed to use the modules: Chile, Colombia and Mexico, adapting them to the Dominican culture. They will then be validated and retrofitted for use throughout the country.

To change attitudes, behavior management and character development based on values, the use of a book and validated.

Barriers, constraints and challenges Ignorance by the authorities and teachers of the method and its advantages ECBI. Initial resistance. Postponement of the start of the pilot plan development progress of the school year when I finish the training process for teachers and technicians. Changing the education minister and the process of readjusting their technical team. Electoral process. Slow approvals. Adaptation of the modules donated by the Ministry of Education. Lack of adequate knowledge of teachers in the use of computers and access to hardware.

Despite all this we have made and will make every effort to ensure that these obstacles are placed in a point not prevent us to implement fully the pilot plan designed to start this school year

To strengthen the startup and ongoing monitoring of the pilot we plan to hire two experts from Chile, for a period of one month in early August of the school year

The leaders of the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic that will monitor and accompany the 12 schools where the program will be implemented in Science are: Dr. Nelson Moreno Ceballos, President Dr. Amado Reyes, Math Mr. Edward Klinger, Economist Mr. Lidio Martínez Cairo, Natural Sciences All trained in the Method ECBI

Proposal for the assembly of the Ottawa IANAS I propose five programs for the new period of IANAS: 1. Capacity building and institutional strengthening. 2. The expansion of regional international relations. 3. The development and strategic planning IANAS. 4. The publication of a regional scientific wages. 5. Outreach Program academies wings to influence national policies on science and technology and innovation. 6. Stress the need to incorporate the science of diplomacy in resolving global agreements required to stop global warming, climate change and preserving biodiversity and ecosystems.
