Data on public perception: what do they show? 2011 WB/IMF Spring Meetings - Civil Society Policy Forum Heghine Manasyan & Gursel Aliyev (Caucasus Research Resource Centers) April 13, 2011

Contents Importance of data on public perceptions: building trust and policies for people CSOs’ data collection efforts: some findings from the CRRC Caucasus Barometer Where and how to learn about the IFOs (IMF/WB)? A step forward: data open access (WB) and on-line analysis. Next steps?

What is the potential impact of the Data on perceptions?  International organizations can better tailor programs for countries  Governments can make better policies  Academics can conduct better research  CSOs, researchers and public institutions can better promote evidence based debates  Businesses can better market products to consumers and take better care on their employee  Etc, etc

CSOs Data collection efforts: where we survey

CSOs Data collection efforts: what we survey Data Initiative => Caucasus Barometer A representative nationwide survey carried out in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia Annual, general focus on various (social, economic, political opinions, etc) issues Core (repeating) questions and rotating blocks Since 2003 Other surveys (on corruption, media, social cohesion, etc)

Methodology Almost 2,000 people in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan Representative of total adult (18+) population Proportionate representation of demographic and geographic groups Multi-stage cluster sampling Household selection: Random walk method Respondent selection: Kish table Face-to-face interviews in local languages

Some findings from the CRRC Caucasus Barometer: perceptions of national and international environment

CB 2009

Trust toward EU (5-point scale, ‘1’ means “fully distrust,” and ‘5’ means “fully trust")

We could find it out in 2011!!! However we do support IMF and WB through:  circulating information on their activities,  organizing round table meetings with visiting and local experts  organizing public lectures delivered by resreps for local researchers, policy makers and students  providing research fellowships to conduct policy oriented applied research  capacity building other efforts (trainings, subscribing WDI and GFDI Trust toward the IMF and the WB?

Where and how to learn about the IFOs (IMF/WB)?

A step forward: data open access and on-line analysis. Next steps? Looking for your recommendations!!!

Data open access and on-line analysis: more capacity and support is needed!

Thank you!
