10.6- Origins of the Cold War After World War II the US and the Soviet Union became increasingly hostile. Cold War an era of confrontation and competition

Soviets - concerned with security and wanted to avoid a future attack by Germany - they wanted all countries between Germany and the Soviet Union to be under Soviet control - they believed communism was superior to capitalism

Americans - concerned with economic problems - believed that economic growth would keep the world peaceful - promoted democracy with protections for individuals rights - promoted capitalism to promote prosperity

Germany Germany and Berlin would be divided into four zones- Great Britain, the Soviet Union, France and the US each controlling a zone. Germany would also pay reparations for the war.

Four Main Causes of the Cold War 1) Mutual Distrust 2) Two Ideologies 3) The Arms Race 4) Competition in the Third World

1. Mutual Distrust – After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the U.S. tried to overthrow the Soviet government. – During World War II, Stalin was angry at the U.S. and Britain because he felt they did not help him enough during WWII. – After World War II, Stalin took over Eastern Europe. He did not hold free elections. 2. Two Ideologies – The U.S. was dedicated to Democracy and Capitalism. – The USSR was dedicated to Communist dictatorship and the overthrow of capitalism

3. The Arms Race – The U.S. and Soviet Union were always building new and more powerful weapons. 4. Competition in the Third World – The U.S. and Soviet Union were each trying to win the hearts and minds of people in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.
