Presentation transcript:

Explain if his efforts were successful. Describe Tecumseh's reaction to the westward movement of white settlers Explain if his efforts were successful.

Tecumseh’s Reaction Angry & fights back Tries to keep whites from taking Indian land Whites killed many Indians in battle including his father Disease & Alcoholism also caused further loss He & his younger brother urged Indians to return to their roots by giving up white ways He tried to unite all the tribes into an Indian Confederation (alliance) He also becomes allies with the British

Tecumseh’s Success? Unfortunately, he didn’t succeed Old Rivalries between the tribes created distrust He & The Prophet stated that, “any Chief who signed a treaty with whites was a traitor & deserved to die” which further didn’t help create trust The British repeatedly betrayed him His brother, The Prophet, ignored him leading to the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Tippecanoe

Tecumseh’s Success? He was killed in Battle of Thames during the War of 1812 After his death there was no one capable of taking his place and his Indian Confederation fell apart.
