 Learning Objectives  To understand common health issues affecting young people  To find out who you can ask for help about these common issues  To find out about ways to stay healthy

 Who could this person be and what do you think they are trying to conceal? “I always tried to conceal it from my friends. I don’t think I told anyone.” “People always say it happens to a lot of people but I never really believed them.”

“I always tried to conceal it from my friends. I don’t think I told anyone.” “People always say it happens to a lot of people but I never really believed them.”  These words belong to Paddy, he wet the bed until he was 11 years old.

 Bedwetting is sometimes called a taboo subject or problem - something people don’t usually talk about or find difficult to talk about.  Taboo problems can affect people’s lives

I am almost 18 years old and it has always been my dream to go to university. The problem is I wet the bed. I have tried alarms and tablets in the past, with no success. Up until now none of my friends have found out that I wet the bed, as I have managed to hide it but I will be living in Halls at Uni. It’s not just the wet sheets and the extra washing, I am worried about other students finding out. I am seriously considering not applying because of my bedwetting. Help! There must be something more I can do.

 Missing out on things such as trips and sleepovers  Feeling different from other young people  Worries that friends and class mates might find out  Feeling isolated and alone  Not knowing where to get help and support  Feeling angry and frustrated  Worries about being bullied or ridiculed by other young people  Low confidence and self-esteem  Tension at home with parents, carers and family

Using the example of bedwetting;  List these affects in order starting with the most serious taking into account the young person’s physical, mental, sexual and emotional health

 Who can help:  Call the ERIC Helpline – Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm  Text  Visit the ERIC web site  What other advice would you give?
