Franklin D Roosevelt Born to a wealthy prominent family Was taught to be compassionate toward those in need.
Polio at age 39 This experience shaped him into a man of great strength and courage. It also gave him even more compassion for those in need. He was able to conceal his condition from the voters in the 1932 election
He became known more for his charm than his political accomplishments. He became the Governor of New York because of his charisma and confidence.
He defeated Hoover in the 1932 Presidential election. It was a land slide victory. He was willing to get the government involved in the economy in every way possible even if it meant making a mistake
He pledged a New Deal for the American People. These massive public works programs had 3 specific goals; Relief- to ease the plight of citizens in economic distress ($’s, Aide, Jobs) Recovery- to restore economic health (Change in structure of Gov’t programs- rules) Reform – To correct the ills & injustices in American Society (Systematic changes to prevent future failures)
