Appetizer Activity Find a different partner You will read one article and your partner will read the other. “Talking to Learn” “Speaking Volumes” When you are done reading, debrief the articles with your new partner Write one significant idea from each article on the given paper and post your ideas on the wall indicated on either side of the room.

Then…. Do your own gallery walk Then, go back to your “Line of Learning” template. In the Appetizer section, record how you might revise or augment your approach to speaking and listening.

Protocol- Expert Groups Elementary East Side of the Room Number off from 1-4 Secondary West Side of the Room Number off from 5-8 Expert Groups: Read the article you have been given As you read, take notes of three text based ideas worth discussing on the “Here’s What!” section or your recording sheet Gather together as an Expert Group, share text based ideas and decide on consensus points Time: 20 minutes

Jigsaw Groups There is a colored dot on your article Find others with the same color Each member of your new group is an expert of one of the eight articles Beginning with Article 1, each member of the Jigsaw Group shares highlights from their respective articles and the group discusses the instructional implications. Record the instructional implications on the “So What?” section of your recording sheet.

District Groups When you hear the bell, you will move from your Jigsaw Groups back to your District Group. Discuss next steps for their classroom, school or district. Record ideas from this discussion in the “Now What?” section of your recording sheet.

Large Group Sharing

Final Course Go back to your original seat. On your “Line of Learning” template, in the Final Course section of your template, add any additional thoughts you have gleaned from the “Main Menu” activity. Information about “The Line of Learning:” Tracks changes in thinking and learning as a result of reading, speaking and listening.

Something Else to Chew On Go back to the Speaking and Listening Standards for K-5 or With a team mate, track Standard One from K through 5 th grade or 6 th grade to 12 th grade. (p. 23 for K-5 and p. 49 for 6- 12) Note and discussion the progression of this standard. What is each grade level responsibility for this standard?
