Mediation Service

What is mediation? A process where a neutral person – the mediator - works with people who have a disagreement to help them to find their own solution and reach an agreement that will sort out their problem or improve the situation. The mediator won’t take sides or judge who is right or wrong. The mediator can recommend a way forward if both sides want this and are unable to find their own solution. This is called mediation with recommendations.

Mediation Is voluntary – you only take part if you want to Is confidential - nothing you tell me will be passed on to anyone else unless you want it to be and what has gone on in mediation cannot normally be used in any later procedures or actions Is quick – mediation can be arranged in a few days Can be cheaper and less stressful than going to court or tribunal Is most effective in the early stages of conflict Aims to maintain relationships

Why should I choose mediation? If you employ - conflict can be disruptive, to those involved and to others If you are an employee - it takes up valuable time, the stress can affect your life at work, you and your family at home Mediation can help you resolve disagreements and get on with ‘normal’ life

When can there be conflict? Between trustees Trustees and volunteers Trustees and staff Management and staff Between staff

Causes Poor interpersonal relations Poor working practices Organisational friction Discrimination Harassment Poor communication Poor management Unfair treatment Unclear roles Inadequate training

Effects/costs Absence Employee turnover Low trust Use of formal procedures Industrial action ET applications Complaints Public arguments Lack of cooperation Under performance Sabotage Legal action Stress Poor decisions Restructuring work Time wasted Low morale Adverse client/customer reaction
