What is Scouting’s Journey to Excellence? Journey to Excellence is the performance assessment, communication and recognition program for Units, Districts and Councils. It is a road map to success. 2 JTE is not just Quality Unit 2.0. It is not just another recognition program. JTE truly assists units in better performance to better support Scouts. Good units can get better. Units who are having issues can focus their efforts. Leaders gain a road map to good scouting.
Journey to Excellence uses a Balanced Scorecard Quality Growth Sustainability Quality, growth, and sustainability must all be in balance for success to be truly achieved.
Journey to Excellence Helps Units With: A framework for planning for the year. A method for evaluating the Unit. Assessment of how you’re doing in the key areas found in great Units. Opportunity to include Troop and Crew youth leaders in unit operations. Specific guidelines and standards of what is good performance. Early warning of potential problem areas. Recognition for good performance. 4
Unit performance is assessed in key areas Planning and Budget Membership Program Volunteer Leadership 5 In each area, the Unit’s performance against specific standards Gold, Silver, Bronze or “did not meet minimum standard” And did the Unit show improvement? Continuous Improvement is the Goal The assessment is made as part of the charter renewal
Here’s an Example for Packs #5 Advancement: Achieve a high percentage of Cub Scouts earning rank advancements. Bronze – Have 50% of Cub Scouts advance one rank points Silver – Have 60% of Cub Scouts advance points Gold – Have 75% of Cub Scouts advance points The objectives for each type of unit are reviewed and adjusted annually up or down based on input from units and overall performance. 6
Here’s another Example: Troops #6 Short Term Camping: – Conduct short term or weekend campouts throughout the year. Bronze – Conduct 4 short term campouts - 50 points Silver – Conduct 7 short term campouts – 100 points Gold – Conduct 9 short term campouts – 200 points 7
And an Example for Crews #7 Service: Participate in service projects with at least one benefiting the chartered organization. Bronze – Participate in two service projects and enter the hours on the servicehours.scouting.org website points Silver – Participate in three service projects and enter the hours on the website Gold – Participate in four service projects and enter the hours on the website points 8
Service Hours Reporting Website For all units Units need to register on the site. Only units can enter unit service. Instructions are at Just “Google” BSA Service Hours Reporting. Don’t forget “Service Days” and Eagle Projects. 9
How is the overall rating determined? The Units receive points in each of the objectives. Total points are added to give the total score. Requirements most correlated with success receive the most points No one requirement is mandatory – but there are a minimum number of objectives for each unit type. Your total score determines your overall rating based on unit type. For 2015 : – For Packs - Bronze - Earn 525 points by earning points in at least 7 objectives – For Troops - Silver – Earn at least 750 points in at lesat 8 objectives. – For Crews - Gold – Earn at least 1,100 points in at least 7 objectives. Journey to Excellence assessment is made at the time of Unit rechartering but no later than the end of the year. 10

Recognition Units with a satisfactory performance receive the “Bronze” level of recognition. Units which do better than satisfactory receive higher recognition: – “Silver” level - Effective Performance – “Gold” level - Excellent Performance Recognition items include a ribbon, patches for the uniform, clip art for Unit web page. Better Performance means better Scouting. 12
Tools to Predict Performance Unit Assessments (Commissioner Tools). On line advancement reports. On line Unit Service Hours reported. Unit Training Reports – Leader Specific and YPT. My.Scouting.Org – Unit Key 3 can get unit info. Talk to all unit leaders, youth and adult, about unit strength, retention, camping and fund raising. 13
Using Journey to Excellence 1.Use the JTE standards form for planning 2.Several times during the year, see how you are doing. 3.Troops and Crews: a Scout led program includes JTE 4.Commissioners can help complete the form during rechartering and certify the performance. 5.When the unit has success, share with your Chartered Organization and all youth, leaders and parents. Your Commissioner can present their recognition publicly. 6.Info at 14
