Waste Sorting & Recycling in Slovenia by Slovenian Comenius group

Slovenian households “produce” more than tons of rubbish every year.

Public holding SNAGA has been encouraging inhabitants of Ljubljana to sort waste for many years now. It has published and dissemnated many leaflets, here is one of them:

Public holding SNAGA enables the inhabitants of Ljubljana to sort: Waste paper, glass and packaging Biological waste Dangerous waste Waste electrical and electronic equipment Special waste

According to SNAGA the results of sorting aren't satisfactory. It‘s fact that people can‘t change their habits over night.

Each of us can contribute to recycling waste. One bir step is to sort waste at home, at school and in public places.

Vižmarje Brod Primary school is an ECO school. We have been sorting waste for many years now. Every classroom is equipped with 3 waste baskets, for: Paper Packaging Other leftovers At Vižmarje Brod Primary School we have beenv also collecting and sorting: Waste cartridges and tonners Waste batteries (they belong to dangerous waste) Waste cans

What is recycling ? Recycling is sort of like exercising: we all know we should do it, but not all of us do it as often as we should—and some of us don’t do it at all. Many people ask themselves: “Would be any easier for Earth if only one people more would recyle?” Well, the answer is yes. Every peacuse of paper would save trees, but scientists are not sure, that people would belive in that.

Recycling is the conversion of waste products into new materials, such as waste paper which can be converted into new paper goods. Recycling is a key component of modern waste management and is the third component of the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" waste hierarchy. We can only say a product has been recycled when it has been bought and used again.

Recycling process Step 1. Collection and Processing Collecting recyclables varies from community to community, but there are four primary methods: curbside, drop-off centers, buy-back centers, and deposit/refund programs. Step 2. Manufacturing Once cleaned and separated, the recyclables are ready to undergo the second part of the recycling loop. Step 3. Buying Recycled Products Buying recycled products completes the recycling loop.

What can we recycle?

Why everyone should recycle? Recycling cuts back on global warming. It keeps our landfills from overflowing. Recycling gives us some hope for this bleak scenario. It improves the quality of our groundwater. It reduces air pollution.

What can I do?

What is stopping recycling? The goverment thinks that recycling isn’t so important so they put more of their attention to other things. One of the main reasons, that people don’t recycle is, that they don’t have special containers in their neighbourhod. Recycling is normally voluntary. Over all recycling rates higher than 10-15% are rarely achieved using this system.

Our conclusions We should act right NOW. Scientists say, that we are the last generation that has opprotunity, to save the Earth. People will not change their habits over night. Therefore it is necessary we teach kids the importance of recycling. You saw many interesting tips, how to recycle, in this presentation. So, get to work! We aren’t allowed to miss that opprotunity to save our only home planet.
