Presentation transcript:

HDC Health Development Consultancy 9 The Aim of MECC Training Sessions ‘To increase the number of brief health advice discussions offered to individuals by front-line staff in Tameside'

Why are we doing this? ‘strengthening self-esteem, confidence and personal responsibility; positively promoting healthy behaviours and lifestyles…Protecting the population from health threats should be led by central government, with a strong system to the frontline.’ Healthy Lives, Healthy People ‘…every contact must count as an opportunity to maintain, and where possible, improve their mental and physical health and wellbeing’ NHS Future Forum Summary Report – Second Phase This is has now been written into Tameside’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy

Healthy Life Expectancy, England, North-West and Tameside

Survival in 20,244 healthy adults aged by healthy behaviours Health Behaviours: Non smoker Alcohol <14 units/wk Not inactive Blood vitamin C –>50 mmol/l –(5 servings fruit and vegetables daily). Overall impact: 14 year difference in life expectancy!! Khaw et al. PLoS Med 2008 Jan 8: 5 (1): e Number of prudent health behaviours Year of study % still alive

Making Every Contact Count Turning ambition into action! There is a need for a culture change amongst organisations towards prevention, to bring the promotion of mental and physical health and wellbeing into the mainstream – doing this has become known as MECC Offering simple advice via a leaflet and sign posting to appropriate lifestyle services for support can really make a difference!

MECC means making the best of every appropriate opportunity to raise the issue of healthy lifestyles Systematically promoting the benefits of healthy living within an organisation and to local residents Raising the issue of lifestyle change with individuals Responding appropriately to the lifestyle issues that may be raised Taking appropriate action by either offering information or signposting to relevant services What is MECC?

It is not about telling people what to do and how to live their lives. It is about frontline staff taking opportunities to raise the issue of healthy lifestyles and offering the client booklet and signposting if appropriate. Its about being the first link in the chain in helping to improve people’s health and wellbeing. What MECC is not

Public Health Messages Quiz

HDC Health Development Consultancy Messages - Salt Adults should eat no more than 6g of salt a day. Children should have even less. Most of the salt we eat is already in everyday foods such as bread, breakfast cereal, pasta sauce and soups. Multiply Sodium by 2.5 to find out salt level.

HDC Health Development Consultancy Fruit and Vegetables Eat a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and aim for at least five portions a day. If you eat one or two portions with each meal and have the occasional fruit snack you might be surprised at how easy it is to eat five-a-day.

Start Active Stay Active At least 150 minutes of mod activity spread over each week At least 30 minutes of mod activity on 5 or more days of the week Vigorous activity is very beneficial 75 minutes or more. UK guidelines 2011 Dept of Health

Healthy Weight To reduce weight aim to: Reduce total calories by 500 per day A 5% to 10% weight loss offers important health benefits.

Smoking Stop!!!

HDC Health Development Consultancy Supporting People to Change How best to support people to change their lifestyles? Be non judgemental and supportive Remember any enquiry into a persons lifestyle can be seen as a judgement, about the choices they are making. Be sensitive but don’t miss the opportunity! ‘Has anyone already asked you about your ……….smoking, drinking, physical activity etc before?’

The MECC Approach Keep it Short and Simple KISS! 1.A SK -Raise the issue - take the opportunity, be brave!! 2.A DVICE - Provide the leaflet or signpost. 3.A CT -Be supportive and offer follow up.

When can you raise an issue? During any day to day contact with a resident When you hear them mention a lifestyle problem When you can see that support with a lifestyle issue may be of help As part of existing information gathering arrangements Other…….

What might MECC look like for you? Discuss the case studies and your opportunities to raise the issue and offer the leaflet
