LIFE05 TCY/HKJ/ – GREEN-TAS Development of methods and tools for the establishment of Good enviRonmEntal pErformaNce in the Tourist Accommodation Sector in Jordan Implementation of pilot studies Margarita Vatyliotou, University of Cyprus Partners Meeting Dead Sea, 28 February 2008 UCY: Green-TAS Project Progress
Presentation Structure 1.Task 5: Economic analysis of the EMS implementation in the Hotel Sector in Jordan - Development of an Environmental Performance Monitoring and Reporting Tool 2.Task 5: Current progress 3.Discussion on the cost/benefit analysis main parameters 4.Task 7: Project dissemination activities
Task 5: “Economic analysis of the EMS implementation in the Hotel Sector in Jordan – Development of an Environmental Performance Monitoring and Reporting Tool” ● Analyse the economic aspects of the environmental management systems in the hotel sector in Jordan ● Introduce environmental accounting in the hotel sector in Jordan in the framework of cost/benefit analysis ● Develop a set of 'sustainability indicators' through which the sustainable performance of hotels would be feasible to be monitored ● To develop a reporting prototype
Task 5 – Actions ● Complete identification of the direct and indirect costs involved in the EMS application and classification of each cost according to their importance for the two hotels ● D14: Cost / benefit analysis report for EMS implementation for the 2 two hotels Deliverable Date: 31/3/2008
Task 5 – Actions ● MoE and HU responsible for the tool dissemination ● D15: A set of indicators for the monitoring/reporting of the environmental status and the improvement of the operations in the hotel sector Deliverable Date: 30/4/2008 Development of a reporting prototype that will allow the hoteliers to disseminate the impact of their managerial decisions on the environment - presentation to the actors concerned (hoteliers, MoE, MoT, etc)
Task 5 – Actions ● D16: Inventory of the environmental performance measures taken by the participating hotels and evaluation through the application of the indicators framework Deliverable Date: 31/5/2008 Implementation of the reporting tool for the two hotels
Task 5 – Current Progress ● Cost and Benefit Analysis for EMS implementation in two hotels ● Determination of cost/benefit analysis main parameters (direct and indirect costs involved in the EMS application) ● Classification of the costs according to their importance Pareto Analysis: A great majority of problems (80%) are produced by a few key causes (20%). If these key causes are corrected, then there is a greater probability of success.
Task 5 – Cost/benefit analysis main parameters Since EMS is currently in its initiation stage in both hotels, the cost / benefit analysis can only be based on a theoretical level five years projection has been requested for the consumptions and guest nights (GN) of both hotels An estimated cost and saving estimation has been requested regarding the Key- card system installation in Petra and other future investments
Task 5 – Cost/benefit analysis main parameters ● Electricity consumption (KWh/GN) ● Water Consumption (m 3 /GN) ● Fuel Consumption - Diesel & LPG (Lt/GN) ● Emissions reduction and equivalence in money ● Waste production, extra cost for waste recycling and environmental benefits ● Investment and maintenance costs for the EMS and environmental benefits ● Cost of the new LPG burners that will replace Diesel burners in both hotels and estimated savings
Task 5 – Cost/benefit analysis main parameters ● Other parameters ? Any ideas ?
