Introducing the Knowledge Management System Manfredi Caltagirone UNEP

Outline for Knowledge Management Discussion Introduction to the Knowledge Management System The KMS database Services and features of the KMS http://ctcn.openei.org - demonstration site

Background

What is a Knowledge Management System? Working Definition of a Knowledge Management System For the purposes of the CTCN, we define a knowledge management system as one that is an organized, primarily web-based structure for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information, products, and services to facilitate technology transfer to and among developing countries. Who should use the KMS? The KMS will serve both internal and external functions of the CTCN. The core external users include: National Designated Entities (NDEs) Government agencies in developing countries Technical institutes Private sector, civil society, and international organizations Maybe, likely not

The CTCN Knowledge Management System (KMS) The knowledge management system will serve as a core resource for developing countries by: Enabling quick processing of requests from NDEs for in-depth assistance from the CTCN, coordinating quick-response support, and tracking and managing CTCN workflow Providing access to climate adaptation and mitigation technology data, tools, reports and other resources and an open platform for input on these resources and knowledge sharing across countries and institutions Facilitating web-based, peer-to-peer learning and training across communities of practice and matchmaking with programs that offer additional assistance. Services of the KMS

The CTCN Knowledge Management System (KMS) technical assistance sectoral focus regional focus capacity building multilingual mobile friendly adaptation/mitigation resources

Robust, Curated Resource Database

Robust, Easily Navigated Resource Database Users will be able to navigate the KMS database by region, country, or sector, or through keyword searches. Resources focused on both adaptation and mitigation will be available and categorized.

Resource Database Topics Include: Best Practices Methodologies and Guides Case Studies Research and Development (R&D) Cost Information Technical and Market Potential Deployment Status Technical Guidance Finance and Business Models Finding Sources and Investment Flows Technology/Service Providers

Services and Features of the KMS

Technical Assistance The KMS will provide access to remote, short-term technical assistance. The KMS will provide access to three levels of technical assistance: CTCN technical assistance Ask an Expert Help Desk The CTCN will facilitate access to expert technical assistance in collaboration with LEDS Global Partnership and the Clean Energy Solutions Center. The CTCN will provide short-term technical assistance on a variety of climate technology topics

Web Offerings: Capacity Building, Finance Information, and Peer Exchange Capacity Building Hub Webinars Sample curricula E-learning NDE training courses Virtual meetings Peer-to-peer learning Finance and Funding Hub Matchmaking information Investment flow information Finance best practices Business models Investment trends Exchange Communities of practice Sharing of resources, experiences, and information

The Demonstration Site http://ctcn.openei.org

See a demo site at http://ctcn.openei.org/ Phase I of the KMS We look forward to your review of the beta site and feedback on what resources and services you would find valuable. The beta database includes resources focused on five priority sectors Launched and operational in the Spring of 2014 See a demo site at http://ctcn.openei.org/

Summary of the CTCN KMS The CTCN Knowledge Management System was developed based on consultations and other research derived recommendations from regional and topical experts The KMS will undergo continuous improvement to incorporate feedback from NDEs The KMS database currently contains over 400 resources spanning five priority sectors and growing: Agriculture, Forestry, Energy, Water, Industry Services and features of the KMS: tiered level of technical assistance, capacity building tools and services ctc-n.org currently in demonstration mode and will be launched in late spring
