Public Speaking NEXT SPEECH FORMAT: The Job Interview Focus: One on One and Small Group Public Speaking

Assignment Overview/ Format 1.Objective: Students will adapt verbal and non- verbal public speaking skills to a small group setting. Students will apply previously developed skills for the purpose of executing a job interview. 2.Format: Students will answer a series of question posed by an interviewing committee. Questions will be largely generic and applicable to a variety of jobs. 3.Venue/Parameters: Conference room table; approximately 5 minutes total.

PART ONE: INTERVIEW CONTENT

Likely Questions in a Standard Interview 1. Tell me about yourself Positive personality traits Relevant background information about your life experiences Highlight your skills Sell yourself without being too pompous

2. Tell me about your experiences working with a team. Knowing this could be a question gives you time to really think about it. Respond with something legitimate and insightful. Be expansive and specific; make your answer positive. Likely Questions in a Standard Interview

3. Talk about a confrontation you had at a previous job or in a previous situation. How did you handle it? This is not the time to play the role of “tough guy.” An interviewer is looking for conflict- resolution skills and leadership. Likely Questions in a Standard Interview

4. What are some of your most positive and negative traits? List more positive than negative Explain a negative that is not a “red flag” or a detriment to the job you are seeking. When explaining a negative trait, be confident about owning up to it and also about being able to rectify it. Likely Questions in a Standard Interview

5. Tell me about some of your previous work experience. (Why did you leave?) Stay positive. An interviewer does not want to hire somebody who speaks negatively about the business/company he or she is working for. Be expansive and specific. Likely Questions in a Standard Interview

Good Example: * It was a very good place to work and I had great colleague and a very good boss. Actually, I am proud to have that work experience on my resume. But at this point I felt like I needed something where I could better use my experience and strengths, and where I think I can make a very positive impact. It was definitely not an easy decision to leave, but it was for the best.

Poor Example: * I felt like I was very good there, and I did a lot for them, but my boss was not a good guy to work for, and I had to get out of that environment. Most of the people I worked with were underachievers and they were bringing me down. The pay was ok, but the hours weren’t fair, and like I said, I couldn’t work for that guy anymore.

What if you were fired? The manager chose to go in a different direction with some things, so they were unable to retain me. - OR – * I think it’s fair to say that we were not a mutually good match for each other. They are a good company, and I see myself as a good employee, but it just wasn’t the right situation for either of us at the time.
