Week One Assignments Ongoing Journal Assignment – Inspired by the 1670 diary of Samuel Pepys, which you will read soon, you will start to keep a diary of your own daily life. Every Friday I will collect one entry made over the week (any day you choose). –This will be worth 25 points per week. You cannot make up this work unless you are absent on Friday. Even then, I encourage you to it to me as an attachment: –Every entry must have your name and date on it (not a full MLA heading). It must be one full-page typed and double- spaced entry. This diary is not meant to be a juvenile record of your actions during the day, but an honest recording of reactions to the day, to people, to school, to life. You will be graded on EFFORT. Everything you write is confidential, unless I think there is a dangerous situation going on. I will be reading for thoughtfulness and effort, not to pass judgment. –First journal entry is due Friday, January 30 in class.

Week One Assignments Elements of Literature –Read pp by Wednesday: Background to Jonathan Swift and the first excerpt from Gulliver’s Travels, “A Voyage to Lilliput.” Answer #3 & 6 on page 496 (type response) Bring your textbook to class on Wednesday, as we will be reading “A Modest Proposal” on pp on Wednesday & Thursday. Vocabulary –Complete Lesson Ten & write sentences (of at least 10 words) for each word. Due on Friday. Quiz on Friday. Novel –Begin Reading A Star Called Henry over the weekend. There will be a quiz on Tuesday on Chapters 1-4, pp

Free Writing Your opportunity to write whatever the heck you want. Sample prompts: –What are your New Year's resolutions for 2009? –What does your iPod playlist say about you? –You've been hired by a bumper sticker manufacturer to come up with ideas. Write a clever or witty phrase you'd love to see on a bumper sticker. –If you had to choose between yesterday and tomorrow, which would you pick and why?

Free Writing Also a good opportunity to write your journal entry for the week: –Begin reflecting on your time at Xavier. How have you matured? Have you grown into a “man”? Have you met your parents’ expectations? Have you met your expectations? Have you met new and interesting people that you intend stay in close contact with? How was your day? Absorb what happened and prepare for the next moments.
