Out-of-State Applicants  Applicants may transfer a valid out-of-state license to NJ  The Knowledge and Road Tests will be waived for those 18 and older with an out-of-state basic driver license  But they must present 6 Points of ID  Those between 17 and 18 years old will be given a probationary license for 1 year and must comply with GDL requirements and restrictions  Individuals from out-of-country  Must pass the Knowledge, Vision, and Road Tests

Road Test  After passing the K&V tests (and completing a 6 hour Behind the Wheel Course [Early Bird]), the MVC will validate a permit to practice driving  GDL permit holders under 21 must have a minimum 6 months of supervised driving practice prior to Road Test  GDL permit holders 21 and over must have a minimum 3 months of supervised driving practice prior to Road Test

Road Test Checklist (Documents)  In order to take the Road Test, applicants must bring:  An appropriately licensed driver  A permissible vehicle  Validated permit  Valid inspection sticker  Registration  Insurance card  6 Points of ID  Must be ORIGINAL documents

Road Test Checklist (Vehicle)  The MVC does not supply vehicles for road test  2 red GDL decals properly located on vehicle (if applicable)  No foot or parking brake obstructions  No parking assist sensors or back-up cameras unless they are temporarily disabled prior to test  No self-parking vehicles  All signals, brake lights, and windshield wipers must work  No rental cars unless the applicant’s name is listed as a driver on the rental agreement  Vehicles registered out-of-state must comply with the laws of the driver’s home state in regard to insurance identification

Road Test Checklist (Accompanying Driver)  The applicant may drive to the Road Test as long as they are accompanied by an appropriately licensed driver  Who is at 21 years of age, has a valid driver license from any state, minimum 3 years driving experience  HOWEVER, if the accompanying driver is licensed out-of- state and has less than 3 years driving experience, the permit holder may not drive to the Road Test (the accompanying driver must drive)  Only MVC examiners are allowed in the vehicle when the test is being administered

Questions  It is legal for the permit-holder to drive to the Road Test…  When they are accompanied by an appropriately licensed driver who is at least 21, has a valid driver license (from any state), and has a minimum 3 years driving experience  The permit-holder must be driven to the Road Test…  If the accompanying driver is licensed out-of-state and has less than 3 years of driving experience  Can a vehicle registered out-of-state be used to take the Road Test?  Yes, as long as it complies with the laws of the driver’s home state in regard to insurance identification

Road Test Pass/Fail  If an applicant passes the Road Test  The examiner will issue an authorization for licensing  The permit, authorization, and 6 Points of ID must be taken to the MVC to obtain a Class D probationary license  The MVC will monitor their driving habits for 2 years  If an applicant fails the Road Test  They must wait at least 2 weeks before re-taking the test

Reasons for Vehicle Rejection  Improper, expired, or no inspection sticker  Lack of examiner access to foot or parking brake  Poor brakes  Parking brake, brake lights, signal lights not working  Unsafe tires  Vehicle interior is unclean  Vehicle failed inspection and motorist doesn’t bring the Vehicle Inspection Report to the Road Test  Fast engine idle  No seat belts  Tinted front door windows  Missing rear-view and/or interior mirrors  Broken or cracked window glass

Questions  What is the purpose of the Road Test?  To ensure the applicant understands the rules of the road and can drive safely  List 5 elements of the Road Test.  If you pass the Road Test, what must you bring to the MVC to obtain your probationary license? (3)  Examiner’s authorization, permit, 6 Points of ID  If you fail the Road Test, how long must you wait before re-taking it?  At least 2 weeks  List 5 reasons your vehicle may be rejected before taking the Road Test.
