Newton Auxiliary Police Department 1321 Washington Street West Newton, MA

History/Mission: Founded in the 1960’s as part of the Civil Defense Act We were first founded in the 1960’s as part of the Civil Defense Act. We remain a volunteer organization and we are not intended to act as front line law enforcement. We are an extra presence to assist the Newton Police Department.

What We Do:  Observe, Report and Assist  Patrol city property in “marked” cruisers  Traffic, Crowd Control at Special Events (Boston Marathon, Walk for Hunger, July 4 th, and other various community events)  Assist during severe weather (Floods, Blizzards, Wind Storms and Black Outs)  Assist in other “city sponsored” and/or charitable public safety-related functions

Training:  All Auxiliary officers are trained in:  Defensive Tactics (O/C, Baton, Handcuffing)  CPR/Defibrillator Usage/First Responder  Anti-Terrorism Classroom Training Materials  Blood Born Pathogen/Hazardous Materials Training sessions for above topics are held at Newton Police HQ  After one year officers are eligible to attend the Reserve/Intermittent Police Academy Held off site at various locations across the state

Requirements:  Must be at least 18 years old  Must be a US Citizen  Must have a “valid” MA drivers License  Must hold a high school diploma or G.E.D.  Must be of good moral character (A Felony or Misdemeanor conviction will prevent acceptance)  Must be willing to undergo a background check, drug test & psychological testing

Why Join?  You will gain self-satisfaction from giving time to your community  Many of our officers have gone on to serve as full and part time members of several police departments in Massachusetts and beyond  Some schools offer course credit for successfully completing Reserve/Intermittent Police Academy

F.A.Q.’s  Can I ride along prior to formally applying?  Please contact one of our members for information regarding ride along info. (See last page for appropriate address)  What does the application process involve?  Once you turn in your completed application it is reviewed by our command staff and background check will be run. Following a clean history, you will be brought in for in an interview.  What happens after I am accepted?  You will be assigned a platoon, at this time your probationary period begins (which is up to 6 months). You will be expected to attend all platoon nights where you will ride along in plain clothes. During this time you will also be notified about training sessions necessary for you to become uniformed.

F.A.Q.’s Continued  How much time is required?  Each platoon is scheduled to work one (1) Friday night and one (1) Saturday night each month. Typical Auxiliary evening patrol shifts run from 6:30pm to 12 midnight. Additionally, ALL officers are expected to work at least one detail each month (2-6 hours)  What happens if I am unavailable to work on a scheduled evening patrol night?  We understand that this is a volunteer position and that things can and do come up so the occasional absence is permitted as long as proper notification is given to your Sergeant or Lieutenant. However our schedule is fixed and everyone has ample knowledge of when they will be expected to work and frequent absence will not be tolerated.

F.A.Q.’s Continued  What equipment and clothing will I need to provide and what will the department issue?  Department Provided items include: Pants, long & short sleeve shirts, a lined cruiser coat, rain coat, hat, and a portable radio.  You are responsible for providing: Your own footwear plus you are also expected to provide all of your own personal duty gear including: Belt, flashlight, handcuffs, baton, and O.C. spray.  What is the Structure of the Department?  The department is commanded by our Deputy Chief and two Captains. We have 5 platoons each commanded by one (1) Lieutenant and one (1) Sergeant. Each of the platoons has between 3 to 5 Auxiliary Officers assigned to them.
